Rams Face Jaguars in London Showdown Without Key Starters

The Los Angeles Rams are preparing for one of their most challenging tests of the 2025 season as they head across the Atlantic to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London. This Week 7 matchup represents more than just another game on the schedule—it’s a pivotal showdown between two teams with identical 4-2 records and legitimate playoff aspirations. The stakes are high, the stage is set, and the Rams are ready to prove they can overcome adversity on the international stage.

However, the road to victory will be considerably more difficult than anticipated. The Rams will be without two of their most important offensive weapons: star wide receiver Puka Nacua and veteran offensive tackle Rob Havenstein. Both players have been ruled out due to ankle injuries, forcing head coach Sean McVay and his staff to dig deep into their roster and find ways to compensate for the absence of these critical contributors.

The Puka Nacua Dilemma: Losing the NFL’s Leading Receiver

Puka Nacua’s absence cannot be overstated. The third-year wide receiver has been nothing short of sensational this season, establishing himself as one of the premier pass-catchers in the entire league. Through the first six games of the 2025 campaign, Nacua leads the NFL with an astounding 54 receptions and ranks second in receiving yards with 616. These numbers are even more impressive when you consider that he was limited to just two catches for 28 yards in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens before exiting with the ankle injury that will now sideline him for the London game.

The statistics reveal just how integral Nacua has been to the Rams’ offensive success. He accounts for a remarkable 36.6 percent of the team’s entire passing attack, making him the focal point of Matthew Stafford’s aerial assault. His ability to create separation, make contested catches, and turn short gains into explosive plays has been a game-changer for an offense that ranks third in the NFL in passing yards. Without him on the field, the Rams will need to completely recalibrate their offensive game plan.

Head coach Sean McVay addressed Nacua’s status with cautious optimism during his press conference this week. “He’s done really well,” McVay said. “I was able to sit with him a little bit last night. He’s making good progress. I am very optimistic about hopefully having him ready after the bye. I think it’ll serve him well and I have confidence in our other receivers to be able to step up.” The bye week reference suggests that the Rams are taking a long-term approach to Nacua’s recovery, prioritizing his health for the stretch run rather than risking further injury by rushing him back too soon.

Rob Havenstein’s Continued Absence Tests Offensive Line Depth

The loss of Rob Havenstein adds another layer of complexity to the Rams’ offensive challenges. The 33-year-old right tackle has been a cornerstone of the Rams’ offensive line for years, providing veteran leadership and consistent play in pass protection and run blocking. Havenstein originally suffered his ankle injury in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts and has now missed three consecutive games as the Rams have taken a cautious approach to his recovery.

In Havenstein’s absence, Warren McClendon Jr. has stepped into the starting role and performed admirably. According to Pro Football Focus, McClendon has earned a 70.4 overall grade through his first few starts, ranking him as the 30th-best offensive tackle in the league. More impressively, he has excelled in run blocking, earning an 83.0 grade that places him as the fourth-best run-blocking tackle in the entire NFL. These numbers suggest that while the Rams are certainly missing Havenstein’s experience and consistency, they have a capable replacement who can hold down the fort.

McVay expressed similar confidence in McClendon while acknowledging the importance of getting Havenstein back to full health. “I was actually just talking to him,” McVay said of Havenstein. “He wants to be out there more than anybody and he’s such a great leader. He’s got such a good vibe. He’s frustrated because he wants to be out there working with his teammates, but he’s been leading in the meantime. We are hopeful that this time off will serve him well. He’s played a lot of snaps in this league and so that ankle has been bothering him a little bit. I think he’s such a warrior that he ended up fighting through, but our job is to protect him and put him in situations that are favorable for him and for the football team.”

Davante Adams Must Step Up in Nacua’s Absence

With Nacua sidelined, all eyes will be on veteran wide receiver Davante Adams to carry the load in the passing game. Adams, who signed a lucrative two-year deal with the Rams in March, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of excellence to the offense. He’s a six-time Pro Bowler and has consistently been one of the most productive receivers in the league throughout his career. If there’s anyone capable of filling the void left by Nacua, it’s Adams.

However, the connection between Adams and quarterback Matthew Stafford has been a work in progress this season. While Adams ranks seventh in the NFL with 55 targets, Stafford has completed just 47.3 percent of his passes when targeting the veteran receiver. The 29 incompletions between the two represent the most for any quarterback-receiver duo in the league this season. Adams managed just 39 yards in last week’s game against Baltimore, marking a season-low output that raised some concerns about the chemistry between him and Stafford.

The good news for the Rams is that the matchup against Jacksonville could be exactly what Adams and Stafford need to get on the same page. The Jaguars rank 30th in the NFL in pass defense, allowing opposing quarterbacks to carve them up through the air with alarming regularity. Just last week, Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold threw for 295 yards against the Jaguars, and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba exploded for 162 yards and a touchdown. If Adams can exploit this vulnerable secondary, it could be the catalyst for a breakout performance that jumpstarts his season and provides the Rams with the offensive firepower they need to secure a victory in London.

    Rams Defense Ready to Dominate

While the offensive side of the ball faces significant challenges, the Rams’ defense has been a revelation this season and will be counted on to carry the team in London. The unit ranks third in the NFL in points allowed, surrendering just 18.3 points per game through the first six weeks of the season. This stingy performance has been fueled by an aggressive pass rush and an opportunistic secondary that has created turnovers at a consistent rate.

Leading the charge is rookie edge rusher Byron Young, who has burst onto the scene with a phenomenal start to his professional career. Young is currently second in the entire NFL with 7.5 sacks, trailing only a handful of established stars. His ability to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks has been a game-changer for the Rams’ defense, allowing the secondary to play more aggressively and create opportunities for interceptions and pass breakups. Young credits a new training method for his strong start, and his development has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the Rams’ season.

Alongside Young, fellow rookie Jared Verse has also made significant contributions to the pass rush. The Rams’ investment in young defensive talent is paying immediate dividends, and the duo has formed a formidable partnership that should only improve as they gain more experience. Against a Jaguars offensive line that allowed seven sacks in their last game against Seattle, the Rams’ pass rushers should have ample opportunities to disrupt Trevor Lawrence and force the Jacksonville offense into uncomfortable situations.

The Rams’ defense has also been excellent at creating turnovers, ranking third in the NFL with 10 takeaways this season. This ball-hawking mentality has been crucial in close games, providing the offense with short fields and momentum-swinging plays. Against a Jaguars team that has been prone to sloppy play—they committed 10 penalties for 76 yards in their last game—the Rams’ defense will be looking to capitalize on any mistakes and swing the game in their favor.

Jaguars Present Formidable Challenge Despite Defensive Struggles

While the Jaguars’ defense has struggled against the pass, they remain a dangerous opponent with a 4-2 record that matches the Rams. This marks the first time in franchise history that Jacksonville has entered an international game with a winning record, and they’ll be motivated to prove they belong among the NFL’s elite. Under new head coach Liam Coen, a former Sean McVay protégé, the Jaguars have shown significant improvement and are building a culture of winning football.

The Jaguars’ offense is led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has the talent and pedigree to take over a game when he’s at his best. Lawrence will be without the services of linebacker Devin Lloyd on defense, who has been ruled out with a calf injury, but the offense still boasts plenty of weapons. Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. has shown flashes of brilliance, and running back Travis Etienne Jr. provides a dual-threat capability that can stress defenses both on the ground and through the air.

One of the most intriguing storylines for the Jaguars is the development of Travis Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Hunter has been attempting to do something unprecedented in modern football by playing both offense and defense at a high level. Through six weeks, he has logged 241 offensive snaps and 142 defensive snaps, but impact plays have been somewhat limited. Coach Liam Coen indicated this week that the team plans to make Hunter more of a focal point on offense, scheming him open and putting him in position to be the primary option more frequently. If Hunter can break out against the Rams, it could change the complexion of the game entirely.

London Calling: A Test of Character and Depth

The Rams’ trip to London has been anything but conventional. In an unusual travel plan, the team won’t arrive in England until Saturday morning, just one day before kickoff. This decision to wait until the last possible moment to cross the Atlantic is a calculated gamble designed to minimize jet lag and keep the team’s routine as normal as possible. The Rams have been practicing in Baltimore at Camden Yards, the home of the Baltimore Orioles, giving them a unique preparation environment before making the transatlantic journey.

This London showdown represents a crucial test of the Rams’ character and depth. Playing without two key starters on offense, in a foreign country, against a quality opponent with playoff aspirations—these are the types of challenges that define championship-caliber teams. The Rams have all the pieces in place to overcome these obstacles. They have a veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford who has seen it all and won it all. They have a dynamic defense that can take over games. And they have a head coach in Sean McVay who has consistently proven his ability to scheme around injuries and put his players in position to succeed.

A victory at Wembley Stadium would send a powerful message to the rest of the NFL: the Los Angeles Rams are legitimate contenders who can win in any situation, against any opponent, anywhere in the world. It would solidify their position atop the NFC West and provide crucial momentum heading into the second half of the season. More importantly, it would demonstrate the resilience and depth that championship teams must possess.

The game kicks off at 9:30 a.m. ET (6:30 a.m. PT) and will be broadcast on NFL Network and available on NFL+. Rams fans around the world will be waking up early to watch their team battle for a crucial victory on the international stage. With playoff implications on the line and the opportunity to prove their mettle without key starters, this is a game that could define the Rams’ season.
