Lakers Nation, Breathe Easy: Preseason Finale Delivers Hope Despite Close Loss

The Los Angeles Lakers may have closed out their preseason with a nail-biting 117-116 loss to the Sacramento Kings, but the final score is far from the biggest takeaway for the purple and gold faithful. In a game that served as a final dress rehearsal for the rapidly approaching regular season, the Lakers showcased a resilience and depth that should have fans buzzing with optimism, even with superstar LeBron James sidelined.

The most significant moment of the night came in the form of a collective sigh of relief. Center Jaxson Hayes, a key athletic presence in the paint, went down with a wrist injury in the first half, sending a wave of concern through the fanbase. Hayes had been a force in his eight minutes on the court, throwing down a highlight-reel alley-oop from Luka Doncic and providing a spark of energy. The fear of another significant injury blow was palpable. However, the post-game news brought a wave of relief: X-rays on Hayes’ wrist were negative. While his status for the season opener against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday remains uncertain, the initial prognosis of a wrist contusion is a far cry from the worst-case scenarios that may have flashed through fans’ minds. This “dodged a bullet” moment serves as the first of many reasons for a hopeful outlook on the 2025-26 season.

With Hayes sidelined for the second half, the Lakers were forced to adjust, and what we saw was a glimpse of the “next man up” mentality that will be crucial in the early weeks of the season. Head coach JJ Redick now has a clearer picture of his rotation, and several players have stepped up to prove they are ready for the challenge. Deandre Ayton, the Lakers’ marquee offseason acquisition, has been nothing short of dominant in the preseason. He capped off his impressive run with a near double-double against the Kings, posting 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Ayton has looked every bit the long-term answer at the center position that the Lakers have been searching for, providing a stable and skilled presence in the paint that will be vital for a deep playoff run.

The pleasant surprises haven’t stopped with Ayton. Veteran guard Marcus Smart, known for his tenacious defense and leadership, has been a revelation off the bench. Against the Kings, he poured in 14 points, showcasing a scoring punch that will be a welcome addition to the second unit. Smart’s energy and defensive intensity will be infectious, and he provides a steadying veteran presence that will be invaluable, especially during LeBron’s absence.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the preseason has been the emergence of Gabe Vincent as the starting small forward in place of the injured LeBron James. In a move that speaks to his impressive preseason performance, coach Redick confirmed that the starting lineup we saw against the Kings will be the one that takes the floor on opening night. Vincent, alongside Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Ayton, gives the Lakers a starting five that is both skilled and versatile. Vincent’s “fantastic” effort, as praised by Redick, has earned him this opportunity, and his ability to knock down shots and play solid defense will be key to the Lakers’ early-season success.

First-year head coach JJ Redick has been decisive and clear in his vision for this team. By using the final preseason game as a “dress rehearsal,” he has given his team a clear sense of their roles and expectations heading into the regular season. This clarity and preparation will be crucial as the Lakers navigate a tough early schedule.

The stage is now set for a highly anticipated season opener against the Golden State Warriors. While the absence of LeBron James is a significant factor, the Lakers have shown that they have the talent, depth, and coaching to not just weather the storm, but to thrive. The resilience in the face of Hayes’ injury scare, the impressive play of Ayton and Smart, and the emergence of Vincent all point to a team that is ready to compete at the highest level. The quest for banner number 18 is about to begin, and despite the challenges, there is every reason for Lakers Nation to be filled with hope and excitement for the journey ahead.
