Heartbreak in the Windy City: Ducks Fall to Blackhawks in Overtime Thriller

In a game that felt like a microcosm of their season so far—full of promise, flashes of brilliance, and ultimately, a gut-wrenching finish—the Anaheim Ducks dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night. The contest, held at a raucous United Center, marked an emotional return for new Ducks head coach Joel Quenneville to the city where he hoisted three Stanley Cups. While his young squad showed the resilience and fight that is quickly becoming their trademark, they were once again left searching for that elusive finishing touch, a consistent theme in the early days of this 2025-26 campaign.

The Ducks, now 2-2-1, managed to salvage a single point from the contest, a small consolation in a game that was within their grasp. They did so in dramatic fashion, with star forward Mason McTavish tying the game with a mere 36 seconds left on the clock in regulation. However, the heroics were short-lived, as Chicago’s Ryan Donato found the back of the net at 2:58 of the extra frame, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and the Ducks back to the drawing board.

For a team in the midst of a lengthy five-game road trip, the ability to battle back and force overtime is a positive sign. Yet, the inability to close out games and secure the second point is a trend that Coach Quenneville will undoubtedly be looking to reverse. As he aptly put it after the game, “Our pace was great. Both teams had a lot of speed, a lot of rush opportunities. Goaltending was outstanding at both ends. We scored a huge goal there, so it was a good point to get, but at the same time, the lead in a game has been evasive for us. … We’ll take the point.”

    A Tale of Two Goaltenders

From the opening puck drop, it was evident that goals would be at a premium. Both Anaheim’s Lukas Dostal and Chicago’s Spencer Knight were in exceptional form, turning aside chance after chance in a fast-paced, high-energy affair. Dostal, in particular, was a fortress in the Anaheim net, making a remarkable 38 saves and single-handedly keeping his team in the game during long stretches of Chicago pressure. His performance was a continuation of his stellar play to start the season, providing a steady and reliable presence between the pipes that gives the young team in front of him the confidence to take risks.

Knight, celebrating his 100th NHL game, was equally impressive at the other end of the ice, making 28 saves of his own. The game remained a scoreless deadlock for over 50 minutes, a testament to the stellar play of both netminders. The Ducks had their opportunities, generating numerous high-danger chances, but Knight stood tall, frustrating Anaheim’s shooters and keeping the game on a knife’s edge.

“It’s tough,” admitted Ducks defenseman Jackson LaCombe. “Obviously, Dostal played great for us the whole night. We had a lot of chances and their goalie played well. We just couldn’t find the back of the net, couldn’t come up with the extra point.” LaCombe’s sentiment echoed the feelings of many in the Ducks locker room—a sense of pride in their goaltender’s performance, but also a palpable frustration with their own inability to break through.

The Quenneville Factor: A New Era in Anaheim

The narrative of the game was inextricably linked to the return of Joel Quenneville. The veteran coach, second on the NHL’s all-time wins list, is in his first year at the helm of the Ducks, tasked with guiding a talented young roster through a rebuild and back to Stanley Cup contention. His return to Chicago, where he led the Blackhawks to a modern-day dynasty, was a poignant moment, and his influence on this Ducks team is already becoming apparent.

Quenneville sees parallels between this Anaheim squad and the young Blackhawks team he inherited back in 2008. “We have a lot of young speed, some quickness, some skill, kind of like Chicago,” he remarked. “A little early to give them that type of credit because that’s been proven (there). We have to prove it (here).” It’s a vision that should excite Ducks fans, the prospect of developing homegrown talent into a championship-caliber core, much like he did with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

His coaching style, known for putting players in positions to succeed and fostering a competitive environment, is a perfect fit for a team brimming with potential. He’s not afraid to shuffle his lines or experiment with his lineup, as evidenced by his use of Ian Moore as both a defenseman and a winger in a flexible 11-forward, 7-defenseman setup against Chicago. This adaptability and willingness to innovate will be crucial as he molds this young team in his image.

“I’m excited because I think it’s a competitive group that wants to get better and won’t be satisfied and take things for granted,” Quenneville stated, a clear message to his players and the rest of the league that the Ducks are a team on the rise. The loss in Chicago was a painful one, but under Quenneville’s guidance, it will undoubtedly serve as a valuable learning experience.

    McTavish: The Clutch Performer

If there’s one player who embodies the bright future of the Anaheim Ducks, it’s Mason McTavish. The young forward, who recently signed a six-year contract extension, has quickly established himself as a leader on this team, a player who thrives in high-pressure situations. His game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation was a perfect example of his clutch ability.

With the Ducks trailing 1-0 and the clock ticking down, a late penalty to Chicago’s Wyatt Kaiser for delay of game gave Anaheim a golden opportunity. Quenneville pulled Dostal for an extra attacker, creating a 6-on-4 advantage. The Ducks, showing remarkable composure, moved the puck with purpose, and it was McTavish who delivered the final blow. He found a soft spot in the Chicago defense and roofed a perfect shot over Knight’s shoulder from the bottom of the right circle, a goal-scorer’s goal that sent the game to overtime.

“It was late in the game, we had to score to tie it up,” said LaCombe, who picked up an assist on the play. “I thought everyone did a great job. We were kind of composed there and we didn’t give up and got one at the end, so that was good.”

McTavish’s performance was another reminder of why the Ducks have invested so heavily in him. He’s a player who not only has the skill to produce offensively but also the grit and determination to will his team to victory. As he continues to develop, he will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of Anaheim’s resurgence.

    The Agony of Overtime

For all the excitement of McTavish’s late-game heroics, the overtime period was a bitter pill to swallow. The 3-on-3 format is a high-wire act, a chaotic blend of speed, skill, and chance. The Ducks had their looks, but it was the Blackhawks who ultimately capitalized.

A 3-on-1 rush for Chicago proved to be the decisive moment. Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks’ own young phenom, fired a one-timer that Dostal managed to stop. But Bedard, showing incredible persistence, retrieved his own rebound behind the net and found a wide-open Ryan Donato at the side of the net for an easy tap-in.

“To come down on a 2-on-1, I know Connor’s been all over it tonight with shots (nine), and he’s all over it,” Donato said of the winning play. “Connor won another battle and stuck with it and hit me in front. Just a nice tap-in.” It was a clinical finish to a thrilling game, a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the NHL.

Looking Ahead: The Road Trip Continues

While the loss stings, the Ducks have little time to dwell on it. They are in the early stages of a grueling five-game road trip, a stretch that will test their mettle and reveal much about their character. The single point earned in Chicago is valuable, but this team knows they need to start turning these close games into victories.

The building blocks are in place. They have a world-class coach in Joel Quenneville, a franchise goaltender in Lukas Dostal, and a budding superstar in Mason McTavish. The supporting cast is young, fast, and hungry. The challenge now is to put it all together, to find the consistency and the killer instinct that separates the good teams from the great ones.

As the Ducks continue their journey, fans have every reason to be optimistic. The future is bright in Anaheim, and while there will be bumps in the road, this team is on the right track. They are a team that is easy to root for, a team that plays with heart and passion. And with a coach like Quenneville behind the bench, it’s only a matter of time before they are once again a force to be reckoned with in the Western Conference.
