Puck drops tonight in Ontario. Not downtown Crypto.com — Toyota Arena — where the Los Angeles Kings open the 2026-27 preseason against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Empire Classic at 6:00 p.m. First exhibition of four. First live look at a roster that no longer orbits Anze Kopitar. First chance for fans to see whether Quinton Byfield already looks like the guy Ken Holland called “Byfield’s team up front.”
Camp opened September 17 in El Segundo with a 63-player pile of bodies. Two practice days later, the Kings are already mixing lines, testing centers, and shipping a young-and-bubble-heavy group east to San Bernardino County with enough veterans sprinkled in to keep the Golden Knights honest. Broadcast is everywhere Kings fans live: SLVR, LAKings.com, the Kings app, and 710 ESPN.

Post-Kopitar Reality Check — Byfield Owns the Middle
The franchise story this fall is simple and loud. Kopitar’s long run as the organizational heartbeat is over. Quinton Byfield is no longer the prospect with upside — he is the top-center responsibility, the 1C Holland wants carrying the offensive identity when the regular season counts.
Day 1 made it loud on the board: Artemi Panarin–Byfield–Adrian Kempe. Day 2 flipped the script. Peter Laviolette put Kempe at center with Alex Laferriere and Panarin on the wings, while Byfield slid over with Alex Turcotte and Erik Haula. Two looks in two days. Same message: Byfield is the franchise bet, and Laviolette will not waste September pretending there is only one way to deploy him.
For InfanityTV sports fans who lived every Kopitar faceoff cycle, tonight is the emotional reset. Preseason will not settle the West — but it will show whether Byfield’s first Empire Classic shift looks like a kid growing into the chair, or a center already dragging the room with him.
Kempe at Center — Laviolette Refuses to Skip the Experiment
Adrian Kempe as a middle-man is not a meme line for social. It is a deliberate camp question. Laviolette said the staff is “looking at different things,” noted Kempe has “played there before,” and made the motivation blunt: he “didn’t want to go through camp and not look at it.”
That is coaching honesty without the varnish. Kempe’s shot and north-south pace already punish soft gaps on the wing. At center, the Kings get a different faceoff option and a chance to stack skill on the flanks — including Panarin — without forcing Byfield into every high-leverage draw from minute one of October.
Will it stick for Opening Night? Probably not as a permanent 1C. Will it create matchup chaos and give Laviolette a Plan B when injuries hit? That is why Ontario matters — preseason is the last free laboratory before the Pacific keeps score that counts.

Bread Man Is Back With Laviolette — Panarin, Power Play, and Brandt Clarke
Artemi Panarin did not sign a two-year deal at $11 million AAV in February to be background noise. He signed to chase chemistry with the coach who coaxed a career-best run out of him in New York. The Laviolette reunion is camp’s soft skill story — and the hard skill story whenever the power play hits the ice.
Early looks already pair Panarin’s vision with Brandt Clarke’s blue-line creativity — walk the line, delay, find seams, finish. If that connection hums before Utah and Anaheim next week, the Kings’ power play stops being a hope and starts being a problem.
Tonight will not feature every veteran minute. It should still flash enough skill to show whether Panarin already looks comfortable in black and silver — and whether Clarke’s first preseason touches look like camp chemistry or October chemistry.
Blue Line Notes, Goalie Names, and the Injury Cloud
Defense camp stayed busy. Drew Doughty remains the organizational compass. Joel Edmundson, Brandt Clarke, Mikey Anderson, and the rest are fighting for pairings in a room with veteran ballast and prospect hunger. Brian Dumoulin failed Day 1’s physical, cleared Day 2, and immediately paired with Cody Ceci — quiet continuity when Vegas stacks speed through the neutral zone.
In net, Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg headline the early workload conversation. Preseason is where backup trust gets filmed and starter sharpness gets rebuilt. Ontario is shift one of that film.
The injury cloud is louder upstairs. Kevin Fiala is out after left lower-leg fractures at the 2026 Olympics — Switzerland vs. Canada, the Wilson hit — then a second procedure this summer when skating still felt off. He spent about two weeks limited in sweat and workout work post-procedure, then ramped with John Odgers before Derik Johnson. The hope is early-October team practice; Ken Holland has floated a November 1 lineup target. October is light anyway — just 12 games — which softens the calendar math but still leaves a skill hole behind Panarin and Kempe tonight. Mats Zuccarello is dealing with a minor shoulder issue on non-contact, expected back next week. Bubble forwards just inherited runway because of both absences.
Empire Classic Tonight — Then Utah, Anaheim, and the Rest of the Slate
Game one is Vegas at Toyota Arena in Ontario — 6:00 p.m., Empire Classic branding, Southern California hockey without the downtown commute. Expect a young-heavy Kings group with enough veterans to keep structure, Golden Knights pressure that ignores the “only preseason” label, and Laviolette mixing looks if the Byfield–Kempe center experiment needs another live sample.
The calendar does not slow down. September 22 brings Utah into Crypto.com Arena at 7:00 p.m. September 23 is Anaheim on the road. September 26 closes another chapter before the roster crunch gets ruthless. Four games. Four chances to decide who sticks from a 63-player September pile.
For bubble players, tonight is a job interview under Golden Knights speed. For Byfield, the first public night of the Holland mandate. For Kempe, proof Laviolette meant the center look. For Panarin, the first L.A. preseason shift with the coach who already maximized him once.

What It Means for Black and Silver
September 19 is not Opening Night. It is louder than a scrimmage. The Kings open preseason against Vegas in Ontario with a post-Kopitar roster, Byfield as the 1C bet, a Kempe center experiment on film, a Panarin–Laviolette reunion chasing power-play chemistry with Clarke, Dumoulin cleared and paired with Ceci, and forward depth stretched thin by Fiala’s Olympic recovery timeline and Zuccarello’s minor shoulder.
Camp started September 17 in El Segundo. The Empire Classic starts tonight. Utah, Anaheim, and one more date wait after that. Answers will not all arrive by the third period in Ontario — but the questions are finally on the ice instead of the whiteboard.
