10 Days to Mānoa: Clippers Open Camp Without Kawhi — Dual-Team Oahu Week, Depth Chart Locked In, Calendar Loaded

Brandon Ingram in Clippers jersey with team logo, Hawaii camp vibe

Ten days. That is the gap between a Saturday morning in mid-September and the moment Clippers basketball stops being rumor and becomes sweat on a UH Mānoa floor. Media Day lands Monday, September 28 at Intuit Dome. By Tuesday the 29th, the plane is pointed at Honolulu. Camp runs through Saturday, October 3. Then tip-off Sunday the 4th against the Golden State Warriors at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center — 1 p.m. HST — with a rare twist: the Warriors are camping on Oahu the same week.

This is the sixth Clippers Hawaiʻi camp since 2017, and the first without Kawhi Leonard as the franchise’s gravitational center. The roster is remade. The calendar is crowded. The island week is the real opening act of the 2026-27 season.

Get in the Hawaiʻi mindset before the bags drop:

The Calendar That Matters — Dome, Mānoa, Honolulu, Vancouver, Home

Strip the noise and keep the itinerary. September 28 is Media Day under the Intuit Dome lights — microphones, new jerseys in the same frame, Ty Lue setting the tone for a season that no longer orbits one two-way star. September 29 through October 3 is Mānoa: five days of installs, conditioning, and the first honest look at who can share the floor with Darius Garland and Brandon Ingram.

October 4 is the Hawaiʻi Classic against Golden State in Honolulu. Tickets have been live; the building will feel like a Pacific summit. Golden State is training the same window at BYU–Hawaiʻi in Laie while L.A. works Mānoa — a dual-team Oahu week that almost never happens. Two Western Conference brands practicing on the same island, then colliding Sunday afternoon for the cameras and the locals.

The road does not get quieter after that. October 10 puts the Clippers in Vancouver against the Toronto Raptors as part of the NBA Canada Games — Kawhi rematch vibes in every headline, even if preseason minutes are carefully managed. October 14 brings the Denver Nuggets into Intuit Dome. By then Lue will have seen enough film to start answering rotation questions that right now are still theory.

First Camp Without Kawhi — What Actually Changes in the Gym

Kawhi’s absence is not a vibe; it is a structural rewrite. For years camp conversations started with availability, load management, and how everyone else bent around him. This year the starting conversation is different: who starts next to Garland, how much ball Ingram touches, and whether lottery talent Keaton Wagler earns early runway or a slower burn.

Garland and Ingram are the locked pieces — the only sure-fire starters if health holds. Max Strus, Rui Hachimura, and Brook Lopez project next to them: size, shooting, and a true center who can space and protect. Wagler, the high lottery pick out of Illinois, is the developmental headline of the decade for a franchise that just had its draft board shredded by league penalties. Bradley Beal, Kris Dunn, and Derrick Jones Jr. give Lue defensive flexibility and veteran scoring off the bench — or, depending on early scrimmages, legitimate starting arguments.

The heel note on Ingram is the quiet story every beat writer will ask about on Media Day. He had a spur removed from the right heel in May and was expected back for camp; “expected” is not the same as cleared for full contact on day one. Watch the ramp. Watch whether he sits early walkthroughs. Watch how much Strus and Rui absorb when BI’s minutes are managed.

More film while the countdown ticks:

Depth Chart Snapshot — Where the Battles Live

Projected layers heading into Mānoa look roughly like this:

    • PG: Darius Garland / Kris Dunn
    • SG: Max Strus / Keaton Wagler / Bradley Beal / Gradey Dick / Cam Christie
    • SF: Brandon Ingram / Jordan Miller
    • PF: Rui Hachimura / Derrick Jones Jr. / Isaiah Jackson
    • C: Brook Lopez / Johni Broome / Baba Miller

That board is crowded on purpose. The backcourt alone forces Lue into choices: Strus’s shooting and size next to Garland, Dunn’s defense as a closer, Wagler’s touches as investment, Beal’s scoring whenever the hip allows him to stay on the floor. Up front, Rui and Jones Jr. compete for rebound-and-switch minutes while Lopez anchors the middle and Broome and Baba Miller chase developmental looks.

Camp is where theory dies. Five days at Mānoa will not settle the season, but they will settle who gets the first-week leash in Honolulu — and who is still fighting for a spot when Vancouver arrives.

Redden Steering, Ballmer Sidelines — Scandal Stays Light, Basketball Stays Loud

Front-office reality is part of the camp story even if it is not the lead. Trent Redden is steering basketball operations while Steve Ballmer serves his league suspension. The NBA’s disciplinary package is done; the federal EDNY inquiry remains open as a separate track. That is the full scandal note for this week: penalties closed, federal file still open, and every useful hour between now and tip-off belongs to the basketball calendar.

Lue’s job is the product. Redden’s job is the process. Players’ job is proving they belong on a roster that no longer has Kawhi as the gravity well. Fans’ job — especially Clippers Nation that has waited through every Hawaiʻi camp since 2017 — is to enjoy the island week without pretending the offseason was quiet.

Why This Island Week Hits Different

Hawaiʻi camps have always been part branding, part bonding, part early-season laboratory. This one carries extra weight. Dual-team Oahu means Warriors and Clippers fans sharing island air for five days before a Stan Sheriff tip. First camp without Kawhi means every Media Day quote about culture and identity will be measured against what actually happens when the ball goes up. Ingram’s heel, Wagler’s minutes, Beal’s availability, and Lopez’s early chemistry with Garland will generate more signal than any press-conference slogan.

Then the itinerary keeps punching. Honolulu. Vancouver’s Kawhi rematch vibes. Nuggets at Intuit. By mid-October the Clippers will know whether this remade group looks like a playoff problem or a rebuild that still needs another year of patience.

Ten days to Mānoa. Pack the film. Pack the questions. Leave the scandal talk in the background where it belongs for now — and let the first practice without Kawhi tell you what this Clippers season actually wants to be.
