Rams Roar Back from Bye Week: McCreary Trade and Nacua’s Return Signal Championship Ambitions

The Los Angeles Rams are riding a wave of momentum as they emerge from their Week 8 bye week with a commanding 5-2 record and their sights set firmly on a deep playoff run. In a season that has already exceeded many expectations, the Rams have positioned themselves as one of the most dangerous teams in the NFC. With strategic roster moves, the imminent return of star players, and a defense that continues to punch above its weight, Los Angeles is sending a clear message to the rest of the league: this team is built for January football.

The recent acquisition of cornerback Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans has added another layer of intrigue to an already compelling Rams storyline. General Manager Les Snead pulled off yet another savvy trade, swapping a conditional fifth-round pick for a conditional sixth-rounder in the 2026 draft to bring the talented defensive back to Southern California. McCreary, who is playing in the final year of his rookie contract, has established himself as one of the league’s most reliable nickel cornerbacks. This season, he has taken all but one of his coverage snaps from the slot position, where his quick feet and instinctive play-reading ability have made him a nightmare for opposing slot receivers and tight ends.

The strategic value of the McCreary acquisition cannot be overstated. By adding a proven nickel corner to the roster, defensive coordinator Chris Shula now has the flexibility to deploy more aggressive man-coverage schemes and exotic blitz packages. The move also allows safety Kamren Curl to shift into more of a playmaking role, where his ball-hawking instincts can be maximized. Additionally, the Rams can now utilize more dime packages without sacrificing coverage quality, giving them the versatility to match up against the increasingly pass-heavy offenses that dominate today’s NFL. For a defense that ranks dead last in the league in 2025 salary cap hits, the Rams continue to demonstrate that smart roster construction and excellent coaching can overcome financial limitations.

Head Coach Sean McVay has been effusive in his praise of the front office’s ability to identify and acquire talent that fits the team’s system. In his recent press conference, McVay highlighted McCreary’s football IQ and his ability to communicate effectively in the secondary. These intangible qualities are often overlooked in trade discussions, but they are critical for a defense that prides itself on playing fast and physical. The addition of McCreary also provides valuable insurance in case cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who is recovering from his own injury, experiences any setbacks in his return to action.

While the McCreary trade has garnered significant attention, the biggest story heading into Week 9 may be the return of wide receiver Puka Nacua. The second-year sensation has been sidelined since suffering an ankle sprain in the Rams’ Week 6 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Nacua’s absence was felt immediately, as the offense struggled to find its rhythm in the Week 7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. However, after using the bye week to rest and rehabilitate, Nacua is expected to be “ready to go” for Sunday’s home matchup against the New Orleans Saints, barring any unforeseen setbacks.

Nacua’s impact on the Rams’ offense cannot be overstated. As one of the most dynamic young receivers in the league, he possesses a rare combination of size, speed, and route-running precision that makes him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. His ability to win contested catches and create separation in tight coverage has made him a favorite target of quarterback Matthew Stafford. With veteran star Davante Adams lining up on the opposite side, the Rams now boast one of the most formidable receiving duos in the entire NFL. Defenses will be forced to pick their poison, and that creates opportunities for the entire offense to thrive.

The timing of Nacua’s return is particularly fortuitous given the Rams’ upcoming schedule. After facing the Saints, Los Angeles will embark on a challenging stretch that includes matchups against several playoff-caliber opponents. Having Nacua back in the lineup gives the offense the firepower it needs to compete with anyone. His presence also takes pressure off the running game, which has been solid but not spectacular this season. Running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum have formed an effective committee, but they will benefit greatly from the attention that Nacua and Adams command from opposing defenses.

The Week 9 matchup against the New Orleans Saints represents a golden opportunity for the Rams to build on their strong first-half performance. The Saints, who enter the game with a disappointing record and a struggling offense, will be starting rookie quarterback Tyler Shough in his first-ever NFL game. Shough, a former Texas Tech standout, was thrust into action after the Saints’ quarterback situation deteriorated due to injuries and poor performance. While Shough showed flashes of potential in his relief appearance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he is still a raw prospect who will be facing a Rams defense that has been opportunistic and aggressive all season long.

The Rams are currently favored by 14.5 points, a spread that reflects both their superior talent and the Saints’ offensive struggles. New Orleans ranks 23rd in the league in scoring, and their inability to protect the quarterback has been a recurring theme throughout the season. The Rams’ defensive front, led by Aaron Donald and a cast of young, hungry pass rushers, should have a field day against a patchwork Saints offensive line. If the Rams can generate consistent pressure and force Shough into making quick decisions, turnovers are likely to follow. This is the type of game that championship-caliber teams are expected to win convincingly, and anything less than a dominant performance would be considered a disappointment.

Beyond the on-field action, the Rams continue to make waves in the community and in the business world. The recent announcement of a merchandise collaboration between the Rams and The Hundreds, a Los Angeles-based streetwear brand, has generated significant buzz among fans. The limited-edition six-piece collection pays homage to the Rams’ rich history and deep roots in Southern California. This type of partnership not only strengthens the team’s brand but also reinforces its connection to the local community. In a similar vein, the Rams recently honored Erika Cuellar and Richard Garcia, the founders of ALMA Backyard Farms, as the eighth “pLAymakers” of 2025. This initiative recognizes individuals and organizations that are making a positive impact in the community, and it reflects the Rams’ commitment to being more than just a football team.

As the trade deadline approaches, speculation continues to swirl about whether the Rams will make additional moves to bolster their roster. While the McCreary acquisition addressed the team’s most pressing need at cornerback, there are still areas where upgrades could be made. The tight end position, for example, has been serviceable but not spectacular. The Rams have leaned heavily on multiple tight end sets to protect Stafford and create favorable matchups in the passing game, but adding a true two-way tight end who can both block and catch would take the offense to another level. Names like T.J. Hockenson of the Minnesota Vikings and David Njoku of the Cleveland Browns have been floated as potential targets, though both would come with significant financial and draft capital costs.

Special teams remain another area of concern. While kicker Josh Karty has been reliable for the most part, he has missed a few kicks and had two blocked, which raises questions about both his consistency and the protection in front of him. The Rams’ coverage and blocking units have also been inconsistent, and a move to add depth or upgrade talent in this phase of the game could pay dividends down the stretch. Championship teams are often defined by their performance in the margins, and special teams is one area where the Rams still have room for improvement.

Looking ahead to the second half of the season, the Rams’ playoff outlook is extremely promising. With a 5-2 record and a playoff probability hovering around 90%, they are firmly in control of their own destiny. The NFC West remains highly competitive, with the Seattle Seahawks also sitting at 5-2 and the San Francisco 49ers at 5-3. However, the Rams have already secured quality wins against teams with winning records, and their remaining schedule, while challenging, is certainly manageable. Five of their remaining opponents currently have winning records, which means the Rams will need to continue playing at a high level to secure a division title or a favorable playoff seed.

The Rams’ success this season can be attributed to a combination of factors. First and foremost, Sean McVay’s offensive genius continues to be on full display. His ability to scheme players open and put them in positions to succeed is unmatched in the NFL. Stafford, despite being in the twilight of his career, is still playing at an elite level and making the throws that few other quarterbacks can make. The offensive line, anchored by veteran Rob Havenstein, has done an admirable job of protecting Stafford and creating running lanes for the backs. On defense, Chris Shula has worked wonders with a unit that is operating on a shoestring budget. His ability to maximize the talent at his disposal and put players in positions to make plays has been a revelation.

The front office, led by Les Snead and supported by owner Stan Kroenke, deserves immense credit for constructing a roster that is both talented and financially sustainable. The Rams have been aggressive in free agency and the trade market when opportunities have presented themselves, but they have also been disciplined in avoiding overpaying for players who don’t fit the system. This balanced approach has allowed the team to remain competitive year after year, even as they navigate the challenges of the salary cap and the ever-changing landscape of the NFL.

As the Rams prepare to host the Saints at SoFi Stadium, the energy and excitement surrounding the team are palpable. Fans are beginning to believe that this could be a special season, one that ends with a return to the Super Bowl and a chance to add another Lombardi Trophy to the franchise’s collection. The pieces are in place, the coaching is elite, and the players are buying into the system. All that remains is for the Rams to continue executing at a high level and taking care of business against the teams they are supposed to beat.

The road to the Super Bowl is long and filled with obstacles, but the Rams have shown that they have the talent, the coaching, and the determination to navigate it successfully. With key players returning from injury, strategic additions at the trade deadline, and a favorable schedule ahead, the Rams are poised to make a serious run at a championship. For fans who have endured the ups and downs of recent seasons, this is a moment to savor. The Rams are back, and they are ready to roar.
