Rams Make Shocking Roster Move, Waive Promising Rookie Chris Paul Jr.

In a move that has sent ripples through the fan base, the Los Angeles Rams have made the surprising decision to waive 5th-round rookie linebacker Chris Paul Jr. as they finalized their 53-man roster for the 2025 season. The news comes as a shock to many, especially considering the Rams traded up in this year’s NFL Draft to select the promising linebacker from Ole Miss.

The Rams sent picks 201 and 202 to the Minnesota Vikings to move up to pick 172 to grab Paul, a clear indication that they saw significant potential in the young player. His energy and athleticism during the preseason had many fans excited about his future contributions to the team’s defense. However, a stint of injuries during training camp may have played a role in the team’s final decision.

The decision has been met with a mix of confusion and frustration from the Rams faithful, with many taking to social media to express their disappointment. The move is particularly puzzling to some, given the decision to retain veteran linebacker Troy Reeder over the rookie. While Reeder brings experience to the table, many fans were eager to see the young, dynamic Paul get a chance to develop and make an impact.

Head Coach Sean McVay addressed the difficult decision, stating that the team ultimately “went with who they felt were the best linebackers for the team.” While this is a standard response, it does little to quell the concerns of a fan base that has grown accustomed to seeing the front office make bold, and often successful, personnel moves. The current linebacker corps now consists of Nate Landman, Omar Speights, Shaun Dolac, and Troy Reeder, a group that will be under pressure to perform from day one.

Despite the surprising cut, the Rams are still looking like a formidable force heading into the 2025 season. The team is coming off a strong preseason and has a roster loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. The offense, led by a healthy Matthew Stafford, is poised to be one of the most explosive in the league. Stafford, who has been recovering from a back injury, has been a full participant in practice and is on track to start the season opener against the Houston Texans. McVay has expressed confidence in his quarterback’s health, stating that he should be ready to go barring any unforeseen setbacks.

The Rams’ receiving corps, featuring the dynamic duo of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, is expected to be a nightmare for opposing defenses. The running game, anchored by Kyren Williams, will look to build on its success from last season. The offensive line, a key area of focus during the offseason, appears to be a much-improved unit, which will be crucial for keeping Stafford upright and creating running lanes.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Rams are led by the perennial All-Pro Aaron Donald, who continues to be the most dominant defensive player in the NFL. The secondary is a young and talented group, and the pass rush has shown flashes of being a disruptive force. The linebacker position, now solidified with the final roster cuts, will be a key area to watch as the season progresses.

While the decision to part ways with Chris Paul Jr. is a tough pill to swallow for many, it’s a reminder of the cutthroat nature of the NFL. It’s a testament to the depth and talent that the Rams have assembled on their roster. The team is in a “win-now” mode, and every roster spot is precious. While it’s disappointing to see a promising rookie go, the front office has a track record of making the right moves to put the team in the best position to succeed.

As the Rams prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Texans, the focus will now shift to the players who are on the field. The team has Super Bowl aspirations, and every player on the 53-man roster will be expected to contribute to that goal. The journey to another championship begins now, and the Rams are ready to prove that they are once again one of the top teams in the NFL.
