LOS ANGELES — The Kings fell apart in the last two periods against the Panthers, 5-2.
Previously on Tuesday, the Kings finally secured their first home victory against the Jets. Now, Los Angeles will look to build a streak against the defending champion Panthers.
Through most of the first period, the Kings built up a 2-1 lead with momentum on their side. Then Anton Forsberg left the net, which tied the game and shifted the trajectory of the tempo.
A controlling tempo for the Kings in the first period completely evaporated. Florida was physical on defense and this eventually wore down the Los Angeles offense.
The Panthers dictated the second and third period with their defense. This allowed Florida to outscore the Kings 3-0 in the last forty minutes.
What started off as a promising first period for the Kings led to a lackluster last two periods. Los Angeles was burnt out from their original high tempo play.
Brad Marchand was the prolific scorer for the Panthers as he racked up two goals. Nikola Mikkola was the top playmaker as he generated two assists.
“Sometimes, maybe it’s us looking for a perfect play. Sometimes, maybe it’s the other team,” said Mikey Anderson. “You got to give them credit too. They defend hard. I mean there’s a reason why they win.”
Although the Kings lost, Corey Perry and Anže Kopitar both scored a goal. Quinton Byfield, Mikey Anderson, Adrian Kempe and Joel Edmundson all recorded an assist.
Los Angeles will now begin their six-game road trip. The Kings can start the road trip with a big win against the Penguins.
Forechecks will be vital for the Kings as Pittsburgh has a high-flying offense. The Kings must slow down the tempo to disrupt the Penguins’ scoring prowess.
