Kings Drop 6-3 to Utah, Then Hit Freeway: Bubble Lineup Expected Tonight at Anaheim

Zero-and-two. Then the freeway. The Los Angeles Kings dropped a 6-3 decision to the Utah Mammoth on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena and fall to 0-2 in the 2026 preseason — and they do not get a quiet practice day to stew. Tonight, September 23, they hit Honda Center at 7:00 p.m. PT for Freeway Series preseason business against the Anaheim Ducks, with a different-looking lineup expected, bubble players pushed forward, and fewer back-to-back veterans under the new CBA’s two-game exhibition limit.

Tuesday was not empty film. Quinton Byfield fought for Adrian Kempe. Brandt Clarke cashed a power-play deflection and sprang Martin Chromiak. Liam Lefebvre logged his first NHL preseason game. Peter Laviolette called out a slow start, unclean power-play entries, and a top line that competed with purpose. Wednesday is the hangover and the opportunity in one night: Empire Classic loss, downtown loss, Orange County chance to answer with the kids.

How Utah Made It 6-3 Downtown

Utah opened midway through the first on the power play. Mackenzie Weegar’s point shot found Daniil But for a tip in the slot — 1-0 Mammoth. Late in the period, a Kings turnover up the left wall let Clayton Keller walk into the slot and beat Darcy Kuemper between the circles for 2-0 into the intermission.

Los Angeles answered early in the second on the man advantage. Kempe worked up top; Clarke rotated down and got a deflection in tight past Karol Vejmelka — 2-1. Utah stretched it again: Mikhail Sergachev to Nick Schmaltz at the left circle for 3-1, then Anders Lee uncovered in the slot off a But feed for 4-1. Chromiak cut it to 4-2 before the second horn after Clarke chipped a glass-and-out spring that Chromiak finished with a backhand move.

The third period gave Kings fans the almost-comeback and the reminder. Kenny Connors shook a defender and found Taylor Ward for a one-timer from the left circle — 4-3. Liam O’Brien stuffed a rebound in front for 5-3. Empty net made it 6-3. Connors now has assists in back-to-back exhibition games. The scoreboard still read Utah.

Laviolette’s Tape — Slow Start, PP Entries, Physical Answer

Laviolette did not sugarcoat the first period. Slow out of the gate. Younger players and new faces watching too much while NHL pace punished hesitation. He liked the response as the game grew — Lefebvre finding his legs, Chromiak generating, Connors making plays — but camp does not gift you a free period. Minute one has to look like minute one.

On the top power play, the coach separated in-zone movement from entries. Once Los Angeles possessed in the zone, there were looks, a post, and the Kempe-to-Clarke redirect. The struggle was breakouts and neutral-zone timing: unclean entries that burn steam and force reset after reset. Clean entries equal fresh shifts. Dirty entries equal chasing. That is the install work that continues into Anaheim night.

Physicality got a headline moment. Byfield stepped in for Kempe after a hit Laviolette framed as late or after the puck had gone through — a fight that the coach called real big for a group that needed more pushback. The top line of Panarin–Byfield–Kempe competed and generated with purpose. Anderson–Clarke had better moments as the game grew, with Clarke moving pucks and springing offense, while the staff still wants quicker first outlets and pace through the neutral zone.

Lefebvre’s First Look — And Tonight’s Bubble Mandate

Liam Lefebvre called the first NHL preseason jersey an honor and admitted the pace jump from Rookie Faceoff to Utah’s NHL-heavy lineup. First period was adjustment. Second and third were legs. That is exactly the kind of hangover film a Freeway Series night is built for — another look for bubble forwards and defense prospects while CBA rules limit how many veterans can burn a second preseason appearance.

Expect a different Kings lineup at Honda Center. Fewer back-to-back vets. More bubble auditions. The Empire Classic and downtown nights already spent precious veteran sample sizes; Anaheim becomes the kids’ exam under Pacific Division lights. InfanityTV will be watching Byfield’s physical carryover if he dresses again, Clarke’s outlet pace if the pair stays together, and which Call-ups or fringe forwards seize Connors/Ward/Chromiak-style moments when the scoreboard gets loud.

Byfield and Clarke — The Feature Names on a 0-2 Night

If you need two skaters to hang the Tuesday story on, start with Quinton Byfield and Brandt Clarke. Byfield’s fight for Kempe was the emotional pulse Laviolette wanted to see more of — stick up for your teammate, push the physical tone, refuse to let downtown ice feel soft. Clarke’s night was the production pulse: power-play deflection from Kempe, outlet that sprang Chromiak, continued evidence that the Anderson–Clarke pair can generate when the first pass is clean. Neither erased the slow start. Both gave Laviolette something to build into Honda Center night.

Panarin’s downtown debut with Byfield and Kempe still grades as compete-and-chemistry film more than a finished product. Laviolette liked the purpose. Pacific Division opponents will not gift clean entries either. The Freeway Series becomes the next lab for whether that trio’s timing survives a second look or whether bubble minutes steal the spotlight while veterans rest under CBA limits.

Freeway Series Night — 0-2 Does Not Have to Define Camp

September 22: Crypto.com Arena, Mammoth 6, Kings 3, Kings now 0-2. September 23: Honda Center, 7:00 p.m. PT, Ducks on the other blue line. Laviolette wants cleaner entries, faster pace from puck drop, and continued compete from whoever wears the crown. Preseason records do not hang banners. Camp habits do. Byfield’s fight, Clarke’s points chain, Lefebvre’s first night, and tonight’s bubble mandate are the real September 23 story — Freeway Series energy with Opening Night roles still on the table.

InfanityTV’s Freeway Series preview is simple: bubble players get the runway, veterans protect their CBA allotment, and 0-2 becomes fuel instead of a label if Honda Center shows cleaner pace from puck drop.
