From Dollar General to DPOY: Byron Young’s Unstoppable Rise to NFL Stardom

In the world of professional sports, underdog stories captivate and inspire. But every once in a while, a story emerges that is so remarkable, so improbable, that it transcends the realm of sports and becomes a testament to the power of dedication and relentless hard work. This season, the Los Angeles Rams have their own such story in the form of outside linebacker Byron Young, a former Dollar General manager who is now not only a household name but a legitimate contender for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

Young’s journey to NFL stardom is nothing short of cinematic. Just a few years ago, he was stocking shelves and managing a Dollar General store, his football dreams seemingly a distant memory. But through sheer determination and an unwavering belief in himself, he has clawed his way to the pinnacle of professional football, and he’s not just surviving; he’s dominating. His story serves as a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, and that sometimes the most unlikely paths lead to the most extraordinary destinations.

The Pilates Power-Up: A Secret Weapon for Success

Every great hero has a secret weapon, and for Byron Young, it’s not a mythical sword or a super-soldier serum; it’s Pilates. Following the Rams’ playoff loss to the Eagles last season, Young dedicated himself to a new training regimen, incorporating Pilates to enhance his flexibility, strength, and stamina. The results have been nothing short of transformative, turning what many considered a solid NFL player into an elite force capable of changing games single-handedly.

Before training camp began this season, Young spoke candidly about his offseason focus. “I really focused a lot on my body,” Young explained. “I took on a new hobby now, doing Pilates… getting leaner, loosening up my hips and my knees, getting them a lot stronger. I want to prevent injuries, so that’s kind of what I’ve been focusing on and my technique.” The commitment to this unconventional training method has paid dividends in ways that even Young might not have anticipated.

The benefits of Pilates for an NFL pass rusher are multifaceted. The practice emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and body awareness, all of which are crucial for a player who needs to bend around offensive tackles and maintain balance while engaging with 300-pound linemen. Young has noticed significant improvements in his breathing, stamina, and overall form. “I don’t get as gassed,” he noted. “In my form, in my technique, every time I’m in position, I can be in it for a longer period of time. Stability with my knees, when I’m in my stance, it’s a lot easier and a lot smoother. Especially bending around the corners.”

His teammate, fellow pass-rushing phenom Jared Verse, has become a believer in Young’s Pilates regimen. When asked what he thinks Young did to elevate his game, Verse didn’t hesitate: “I’m being dead serious when I say Pilates. I’m being dead serious. He’s been so intentional with it. He’s talking about how good it makes him feel after the fact and how good his trainer is and everything like that. He feels more flexible. He feels more fluid. He feels more confident in his body. I feel like that’s what I attribute to it.” This newfound physical prowess, combined with his natural football instincts and blazing 4.43-second 40-yard dash speed, has turned Young into a quarterback’s worst nightmare.

A Historic Season in the Making

The numbers speak for themselves, and they tell a story of dominance that is rare even among the NFL’s elite defenders. Through just seven games of the 2025 season, Young has already racked up an incredible nine sacks, tying him for the NFL lead with the New York Giants’ Brian Burns. This remarkable feat has not only set a new career-high for Young but has also put him on a trajectory to shatter both personal and franchise records. At his current pace, he’s projected to finish the season with over 18 sacks, a number that would place him among the all-time greats and firmly establish him as one of the premier pass rushers in the league.

But Young’s dominance extends beyond just the raw sack numbers, impressive as they are. He is currently on a nine-game streak with at least half a sack, putting him just two games shy of tying the NFL record for consecutive games with a sack. This historic pursuit is a testament to his consistency and his relentless motor, which never seems to quit. Game after game, opposing offenses have tried to scheme around him, to double-team him, to chip him at the line, but nothing has worked. Young finds a way to make an impact, and that reliability is what separates good players from great ones.

What makes Young’s performance even more impressive is the context in which it’s happening. The NFL has become increasingly pass-heavy, and offenses have developed sophisticated schemes to neutralize pass rushers. Yet Young has thrived in this environment, using his combination of speed, technique, and now enhanced flexibility to beat even the most talented offensive tackles in the league. His ability to win with both power and finesse makes him nearly impossible to game-plan against, as he can adjust his approach based on the matchup and situation.

A Defensive Force Igniting a Super Bowl Contender

Young’s individual brilliance has had a ripple effect on the entire Rams defense, transforming what was a question mark heading into the season into one of the league’s most formidable units. His ability to generate pressure on the quarterback has created opportunities for his teammates, and the results are evident across the board. The Rams’ defense has already recorded 26 sacks this season, a significant increase from their total of 38 in all of 2024. With 11 different players having recorded at least one sack, it’s clear that Young’s presence has elevated the entire unit and created a culture of aggressive, attacking football.

The defensive line, in particular, has benefited from Young’s excellence. Playing alongside talented defenders like Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and rookie sensation Jared Verse, Young has helped create one of the most fearsome pass-rushing groups in the NFL. Offensive coordinators are faced with an impossible dilemma: focus too much attention on Young, and Verse or Turner will beat you; try to spread the protection, and Young will exploit the one-on-one matchup. This collective strength has made the Rams’ defense a nightmare for opposing offenses and a joy to watch for fans.

This defensive resurgence has been a key factor in the Rams’ impressive 5-2 start to the season. With a dominant defense complementing a high-powered offense led by veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford and star wide receiver Davante Adams, the Rams are looking like a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Their recent 35-7 blowout victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London was a statement to the rest of the league: the Rams are for real, and they’re coming for a championship.

In that London game, Stafford threw five touchdown passes, tying his career high and setting a new Rams franchise record for touchdown passes in a single game. Adams hauled in three of those touchdowns, showcasing the chemistry he’s developed with Stafford since joining the team. Rookie wide receiver Konata Mumpfield and tight end Terrance Ferguson both scored their first career touchdowns, demonstrating the depth and versatility of the Rams’ offense. But it was the defense, led by Young’s 1.5 sacks, that set the tone early and never let the Jaguars establish any rhythm.

The DPOY Race: Young’s Case for the Crown

As the season reaches its midpoint, the conversation around the Defensive Player of the Year award is heating up, and Byron Young’s name is firmly in the mix. While players like Jared Verse, Chris Jones, and others are also having outstanding seasons, Young’s combination of production, consistency, and impact on winning makes him a compelling candidate. The fact that he’s doing this in his third NFL season, after working his way up from being a Dollar General manager, adds a narrative element that voters often find compelling.

Historically, the DPOY award has favored pass rushers who can consistently get to the quarterback, and Young certainly fits that bill. If he can maintain his current pace and help lead the Rams to a deep playoff run, he’ll have a strong case for taking home the hardware. The award would be a fitting capstone to one of the most remarkable comeback stories in recent NFL history and would cement Young’s status as one of the league’s premier defenders.

The Road Ahead: A Bright Future for the Rams

As the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 4th, the Rams find themselves in an enviable position. With a strong roster and a winning record, they are expected to be buyers, looking to add even more talent for a deep playoff run. Analysts have suggested that the team should focus on positions like outside cornerback, right tackle, or special teams, areas where an upgrade could push them over the top. The emergence of players like Byron Young has given the front office the flexibility to be aggressive and make the moves necessary to bring another championship to Los Angeles.

General Manager Les Snead has a history of making bold moves at the trade deadline, most famously acquiring Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. during the Rams’ Super Bowl-winning 2021 season. While the team may not make moves of that magnitude this year, as they want to preserve draft capital for finding a future quarterback, the window with Stafford playing at an MVP level is limited. Young’s emergence as a defensive cornerstone gives the Rams confidence that they have the foundation to compete for championships, both now and in the future.

Looking beyond this season, the Rams appear to be in excellent shape on the defensive side of the ball. With Young, Verse, Turner, and other young talents locked in, the team has a core that can anchor the defense for years to come. This continuity and talent will be crucial as the team navigates the inevitable transitions that come with an aging quarterback and the need to eventually find Stafford’s successor. But for now, the focus is squarely on maximizing the current window and bringing another Lombardi Trophy to Los Angeles.

    An Inspiration Beyond Football

From the aisles of Dollar General to the bright lights of the NFL, Byron Young’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of never giving up on your dreams. He is more than just a football player; he is an inspiration, a symbol of hope for anyone who has ever been told their dreams are out of reach. His story resonates with people from all walks of life, reminding us that success is not always a straight line and that setbacks can be the setup for incredible comebacks.

Young’s commitment to continuous improvement, exemplified by his adoption of Pilates training, shows that even at the highest levels of professional sports, there is always room to grow and evolve. His willingness to try something unconventional and stick with it, even when it might have seemed silly to others, demonstrates the kind of open-mindedness and dedication that separates champions from everyone else. As he continues his historic season, one thing is certain: the world will be watching, and the legend of Byron Young is just beginning.

For Rams fans, Young’s emergence is a source of immense pride and excitement. He represents everything that makes sports special: the triumph of the human spirit, the rewards of hard work, and the thrill of watching excellence unfold before our eyes. As the Rams push toward the playoffs and beyond, Byron Young will be at the forefront, leading the charge and inspiring his teammates to reach new heights. The journey from Dollar General to DPOY candidate is nearly complete, and the final chapters promise to be the most thrilling yet.
