Dončić and Reaves Power Shorthanded Lakers Past Knicks 110-97 in Statement Win

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Los Angeles Lakers, playing without their king, sent a powerful message to the rest of the NBA on Sunday, securing a decisive 110-97 victory over the surging New York Knicks at Crypto.com Arena. Led by spectacular performances from Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, the Lakers dominated from start to finish, proving they are a formidable force even without LeBron James on the floor.

The win moves the Lakers to 39-25 on the season, extending their winning streak to four games and marking their fifth victory in the last six contests. The Knicks, who entered the game riding a wave of momentum after demolishing the Denver Nuggets by 39 points just days earlier, were held to a season-low shooting performance, going just 8-of-34 from three-point range — a dismal 23.5 percent clip that ultimately proved insurmountable.

    Dončić Delivers Again

Luka Dončić was once again the star of the show, pouring in 35 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. He was a constant threat from all over the court, draining five three-pointers and keeping the Knicks defense on its heels throughout the afternoon. His most memorable moment came during a decisive third-quarter run, when he drained an absurd fallaway three-pointer that extended the Lakers’ lead to 23 points and effectively put the game out of reach.

After the game, Dončić was quick to credit his team’s defensive effort rather than his own offensive brilliance. “I think we played amazing defense today,” he said. “To hold a team like the Knicks, who are a very good offensive team, under 100 points is amazing. Everybody was locked in from the beginning.” The Lakers held the Knicks to just 97 points — well below their season average — and forced 18 turnovers in the process.

Dončić also highlighted the team’s growing defensive identity as a key driver of the win. “We’ve been talking about it all season — we need to be a better defensive team,” he said. “And today we showed what we can do when we’re all locked in. It gives us a lot of confidence moving forward, especially with the schedule we have coming up.” The Lakers are currently ranked first in the NBA in charges drawn, a testament to their improved defensive commitment under head coach JJ Redick.

Reaves Steps Up in LeBron’s Absence

Austin Reaves was equally impressive, scoring 25 points on an efficient 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. He was aggressive from the opening tip, attacking the basket and converting at the free-throw line — going 6-of-7 from the stripe — whenever the Knicks tried to contain him. Reaves also added 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in a complete two-way performance that underscored his emergence as one of the most reliable players in the Western Conference.

Rui Hachimura contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, providing valuable frontcourt depth in the absence of LeBron James. Hachimura praised Reaves’ performance after the game. “He was aggressive from the beginning,” Hachimura said. “That’s what we need from him, especially in a big game like this.” Hachimura himself made a conscious effort to be aggressive on both ends of the floor from the outset, noting that the early 12:30 PM tip-off time required the team to be mentally sharp from the very first possession.

    A Complete Team Effort

While Dončić and Reaves led the charge, this was truly a complete team victory for the Lakers. Playing without LeBron James — who was sidelined for the second consecutive game with a bruised left elbow and left foot arthritis — every player who stepped on the court made a meaningful contribution. Luke Kennard came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and score 12 points, providing crucial spacing and shot-making. DeAndre Ayton, returning from a knee issue that had kept him out of the Pacers game, was solid in the frontcourt with 6 points and 8 rebounds in 20 minutes.

Perhaps most impressively, the Lakers’ defensive unit — anchored by a second-quarter lineup featuring Jarred Vanderbilt and Max Christie — forced multiple turnovers and helped the team build a commanding lead. “A crucial moment occurred in the second quarter when a highly active defensive lineup forced several turnovers and helped the team build a lead,” Hachimura noted. “Everybody stepped up. We played with a lot of pride, especially with LeBron out. It was a big rivalry game, and we wanted to show what we can do.”

The Lakers set the tone early, jumping out to a 31-23 lead after the first quarter. They dominated the third quarter 34-20, extending their lead to as many as 23 points. While the Knicks made a late push in the fourth quarter — cutting the deficit to 10 with Jalen Brunson scoring 10 of his 24 points in the final period — the Lakers never truly felt threatened. Luke Kennard’s three-pointer with 1:37 remaining and Dončić’s ice-cold fifth three of the night with 1:05 left sealed the victory.

    Knicks Go Cold in LA

The Knicks, who had been one of the hottest teams in the league, simply couldn’t find their rhythm on Sunday. Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with a dominant 25 points and 16 rebounds, but he didn’t get enough help from his teammates. Brunson had 24 points but was just 8-of-19 from the field and committed 7 turnovers. Mikal Bridges, who has been a key contributor for New York, had a shockingly quiet night — going scoreless in 27 minutes of action, missing all six of his shot attempts. OG Anunoby chipped in 13 points, but the Knicks as a team shot just 42.7% from the field and were outrebounded 42-47.

The loss drops the Knicks to 41-24 on the season. They will look to bounce back on Monday when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers in the second game of their five-game road trip.

    Playoff Implications and What’s Next

This was a massive win for the Lakers, not just because it came against a quality opponent, but because it demonstrated they can win without their best player. With just 18 games remaining in the regular season, the Lakers are hitting their stride at the perfect time. The victory improves their record to 39-25 and solidifies their position in the Western Conference playoff race. Up next for the Lakers is a home game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday — another significant test of their championship credentials.

“This win gives us a lot of confidence,” Dončić said. “We know we can beat anybody, with or without LeBron. We just have to keep playing our game and stay focused.” For a Lakers team that has faced questions all season about their ability to compete with the Eastern Conference elite, Sunday’s dominant performance against the surging Knicks provided the most convincing answer yet. The Lakers are for real — and the rest of the NBA is on notice.
