Dominant Defense & Explosive Offense: Are the Rams the NFL’s Best Kept Secret?

The Los Angeles Rams are quietly putting the league on notice. After a rollercoaster 2024 season, the Rams have stormed out to an impressive 5-2 record, sitting atop a crowded NFC. While many pundits predicted a rebuilding year, the Rams have defied expectations, showcasing a dominant defense and an explosive offense that has them looking like a legitimate Super Bowl contender. As they head into their bye week, it’s time to ask the question: Are the Rams the NFL’s best-kept secret?

The heart and soul of this Rams team is its suffocating defense. Defensive Coordinator Chris Shula has orchestrated a masterpiece, with his unit ranking among the league’s elite. The Rams are allowing a stingy 16.7 points per game, the second-best mark in the NFL. They’ve been particularly dominant in their last two outings, holding the high-powered Baltimore Ravens to a mere three points and shutting down the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, allowing only a single touchdown.

The Rams’ defensive success is built on a foundation of relentless pressure and opportunistic takeaways. The defensive line has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks, racking up an impressive 26 sacks through seven games. This constant pressure has led to a league-leading -68.4 defensive expected points added (EPA), a testament to their ability to prevent scores and create negative plays for the offense. The Rams have also been adept at forcing turnovers, with 10 takeaways on the season, including a league-best six fumble recoveries.

A key to their defensive prowess has been their ability to dominate on early downs, forcing opponents into predictable passing situations. The Rams are allowing a league-low 4.3 yards per play on first and second downs, which has resulted in a league-high 7.7 third-and-longs forced per game. This has allowed their pass rush to pin their ears back and get after the quarterback, leading to a stifling 34% opponent third-down conversion rate, the fourth-best in the NFL.

Second-year linebacker Byron Young has emerged as a legitimate superstar, leading the league with nine sacks. He’s currently on a nine-game sack streak, just two shy of the NFL record. Alongside him, fellow linebacker Jared Verse has been a disruptive force, tallying four sacks and three forced fumbles. The offseason addition of defensive tackle Poona Ford has solidified the run defense, which has yet to allow a run of 20 or more yards this season. They’ve bottled up some of the league’s best running backs, holding Saquon Barkley to just 46 yards and Christian McCaffrey to 57.

While the defense has been grabbing the headlines, the Rams’ offense has been equally impressive. Matthew Stafford is playing some of the best football of his career, looking rejuvenated and healthy. He leads the league with 17 touchdown passes and 19 “big-time throws,” a metric that measures passes with excellent ball location and timing. His 109.3 passer rating is the fourth-best in the NFL, and his 17-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio is on pace to be a career-best.

The addition of Davante Adams has unlocked a new dimension for the Rams’ passing attack. His presence has opened up the field for rookie sensation Puka Nacua, who has been a revelation. Despite missing nearly two full games, Nacua leads the NFL in reception EPA and ranks among the league leaders in receptions, receiving yards, and yards after the catch. The connection between Stafford and his receivers has been electric, with the Rams leading the league with 30 big passes of 20 or more yards.

The offense’s explosiveness isn’t limited to the passing game. The backfield duo of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum has provided a spark to the running game, with the team ranking 11th in the league with 20 big runs of 10 or more yards. This balanced attack has made the Rams’ offense one of the most dangerous in the league, and they lead the NFL with 50 total big plays.

The Rams are a team that feels they have something to prove. Despite their hot start, they believe they’ve underachieved, a scary thought for the rest of the NFC. With a dominant defense, an explosive offense, and a veteran quarterback playing at an MVP level, the Rams have all the ingredients for a deep playoff run. The upcoming schedule is challenging, with divisional games against the 49ers and Seahawks, as well as a tough matchup against the Lions. However, this team has shown they can compete with anyone. Don’t be surprised if the Rams are not-so-secretly playing for it all come February.
