Heading into the season, there are monumental questions about the Kings’ new-look defense. With key players heading out, who will replace their production in 2026?
Leaving Players
Vladislav Gavrikov
One of the most important defensemen from last season was Vladislav Gavrikov. The Kings relied heavily on his defensive production so much that Gavrikov received most of the minutes. He had the second most total time on the ice, only following goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Gavrikov brought in elite zone defense, which allowed the Kings to implement a 1-2-2 zone defense. This zone defense would also allow Gavrikov to control the neutral zone. The presence on the blue line helped Los Angeles limit the opposing team’s transition offense.
Gavrikov was the third anchor for the defensive duo of Mikey Anderson and Drew Doughty. Now that Gavrikov has left for the New York Rangers, there are big skates for the Kings to fill.
Jordan Spence
A key depth player the Kings lost was Jordan Spence, who went to the Ottawa Senators. Although this loss isn’t as impactful as Gavrikov, he is still a solid player out the door. Not only was Spence impactful for energy minutes, but he showed flashes at a young age. Now at just 24 years old, Spence is just scratching the surface of his abilities as a player. Spence was one of the best puck-moving Kings from last season, which helped the offense. His IQ was also beneficial for stopping the passing and shooting lanes of opponents. Spence wasn’t the most vital defenseman, but he did have potential to progress in Los Angeles.
Incoming Kings
Brian Dumoulin
To replenish the defense, the Kings brought in two-time Stanley Cup champion, Brian Dumoulin. After early success, Dumoulin spent most of his career as a depth piece on playoff teams. The experience Dumoulin possesses is exactly what the Kings currently need. Los Angeles aims to make it out of the first round and playoff leadership can make that goal happen. Along with playoff experience, Dumoulin brings positional awareness and physicality. A “6’4” frame with the ability to contribute on zone defense would help any aspiring playoff team. Dumoulin is a season veteran that could be a very useful addition to the Kings this season.
Cody Ceci
Similar to how the Kings added Corey Perry for forward help, they also signed another former Oiler for defense. Before his playoff stint with Dallas last season, Ceci spent three seasons in Edmonton. Being around that offense for multiple seasons, Ceci can bring his knowledge of the Oilers to help the Kings. To compliment his veteran presence, Ceci is also a physical defender. His large physique helps block shots and protect the net when the defense needs to play conservatively. Like Dumoulin, Ceci was picked up for his experience and versatility for depth. When utilized properly, Ceci can be a spark of energy for the Kings on defense.
2026 Speculation
The biggest concern for the Kings is how the absence of Gavrikov will be replaced. The two pieces they picked up are great for depth and experience, but these aren’t top defenseman. This means Brandt Clark and Joel Edmundson must cover the void from Gavrikov. This will allow Dumoulin and Ceci to excel as physical third pair defensemen.
