Anaheim’s New Groove: Inside the Ducks’ Explosive Offense and Playoff Dreams

The air in the TD Garden was thick with tension. The Boston Bruins, desperate to snap a losing streak, had clawed their way back from a two-goal deficit in the third period, tying the game at five goals apiece. For a fleeting moment, it seemed the Anaheim Ducks might let another road game slip through their fingers. But this is not the same Ducks team that struggled in seasons past. Just thirty seconds after the Bruins tied the game, Troy Terry, the heart and soul of this young squad, found the back of the net, putting Anaheim ahead for good. The Ducks would add an empty-netter to seal a wild 7-5 victory, a win that was more than just two points in the standings. It was a statement.

For a franchise that has been patiently rebuilding, stockpiling young talent and waiting for the right moment to re-emerge as a contender, the 2025-26 season is shaping up to be a turning point. With a blend of electrifying youth, savvy veteran leadership, and a new coach at the helm, there’s a palpable buzz around this team. The message from the locker room is clear: the rebuild is over. It’s “playoffs or bust” in Anaheim, and their recent performance on a tough East Coast road trip is proving they have the firepower to back it up.

    Granlund’s Unforgettable Night

At the center of the offensive explosion in Boston was veteran forward Mikael Granlund. In what can only be described as a masterclass performance, Granlund recorded a career-high five points, with two goals and three assists. It was a stunning display of skill and opportunism, the kind of performance that can galvanize a team. To put it in perspective, the last time a Ducks player had a five-point game was the legendary Ryan Getzlaf back in November 2015. Granlund, who had a quiet start to the season with just three assists in the first six games, single-handedly rewrote the narrative of his season in one spectacular night.

His first goal, a power-play tally early in the third period, broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Ducks a crucial lead. His second, an empty-net goal with just over two minutes remaining, was the final nail in the coffin for the Bruins. But it was his three assists that truly showcased his vision and playmaking ability, consistently setting up his teammates for high-quality scoring chances. After the game, a humble Granlund acknowledged the team’s offensive prowess while also recognizing the need for improvement. “That was a good road win,” he said. “We scored seven goals, and that’s pretty good on the road, but we’ve got to clean it up and don’t want to give up five goals in a game.” It’s that kind of veteran perspective, celebrating the win while staying focused on the bigger picture, that is so valuable to this young Ducks team.

The Kids Are Alright (And Then Some)

While Granlund stole the headlines, the victory in Boston was a total team effort, with the Ducks’ youth movement on full display. Perhaps the most surprising contribution came from Nikita Nesterenko, who, like Granlund, had a career night. The young forward, who had been held pointless in the first four games of the season and had only eight points in his entire 36-game NHL career, erupted for four assists. His setup on Troy Terry’s game-winning goal was a thing of beauty, a perfect centering pass that found Terry in the slot for the go-ahead score. It was a breakout performance that hints at the offensive depth the Ducks are beginning to cultivate.

And then there’s Troy Terry. The captain, who has been the emotional leader of this team through the lean years of the rebuild, once again came through in the clutch. His goal, just thirty seconds after the Bruins had tied the game, was a dagger to the hearts of the Boston faithful and a testament to his resilience and scoring touch. It was his second goal of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a bigger moment. The supporting cast also played a crucial role, with goals from Drew Helleson, Cutter Gauthier, and Sam Colangelo, a Stoneham, Massachusetts native who scored his first goal of the season in front of his hometown crowd. This offensive outburst, coming from all corners of the lineup, is a promising sign for a team that has struggled to score consistently in recent years.

    A Defensive Duo to Watch

For all the offensive fireworks, the long-term success of the Anaheim Ducks will hinge on their ability to defend. And a key part of that defensive equation is the burgeoning partnership between 22-year-old phenom Olen Zellweger and veteran stalwart Jacob Trouba. This pairing, the only one to boast an expected goals percentage above 50% according to Moneypuck, is a fascinating blend of styles. Zellweger is the quintessential modern offensive defenseman, an elite skater who is always looking to join the rush and create scoring chances. Trouba, on the other hand, is a throwback, a physical, stay-at-home defenseman who uses his size and strength to punish opposing forwards and block shots.

It’s a classic yin and yang, and the early returns have been incredibly promising. Coach Joel Quenneville has taken notice, keeping the pair together even as he shuffles his other defensive pairings. “I think he gives us a real presence back there,” Quenneville said of Trouba. “I think there’s some physicality that keeps our opponents on alert.” Trouba, for his part, has been encouraging his young partner to embrace his offensive instincts. “He’s a great skater,” Trouba said. “He gets up the ice, has a lot of offensive ability. Encouraging him to do that and play his game.” Zellweger, who added six to seven pounds of muscle in the offseason, is feeling more confident than ever. “Playing with Troubs has been awesome,” he said. “He’s a great defenseman and he makes it easy for me back there.” The development of this pairing will be a crucial storyline to follow as the season progresses.

The Road Ahead: Momentum and Matchups

The win in Boston was the second victory in a row for the Ducks and pushed their record on their current five-game road trip to an impressive 2-0-1. This is the kind of performance on the road that separates playoff teams from the pretenders. The Ducks are not just surviving on this trip; they are thriving, building momentum and confidence with each game. The challenge continues on Saturday, as they head to Tampa to take on a Lightning team that has had a slow start to the season but is always dangerous.

Looking at the bigger picture, the Ducks are currently 4-2-1, good for nine points and a solid start to the season. The playoff aspirations are very much alive, and with a young core that includes Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish, and Trevor Zegras, the future is bright. The addition of veteran leaders like Trouba, Frank Vatrano, and Alex Killorn has provided a steadying presence, and new coach Joel Quenneville seems to be pushing all the right buttons.

Of course, there will be challenges. The injury to Radko Gudas in the Boston game, which forced the Ducks to play with only five defensemen for two periods, is a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NHL. And while the offense has been electric, the team will need to tighten things up defensively if they want to make a serious playoff run. Giving up five goals, even in a win, is not a sustainable recipe for success. Still, the early signs are overwhelmingly positive. The power play is clicking, the young players are developing, and there’s a newfound swagger to this team.

For fans who have been patiently waiting for the Ducks to return to relevance, this season feels different. There’s a sense of excitement and anticipation that has been missing for the past few years. The team is playing an entertaining brand of hockey, and they are winning. Whether or not they can sustain this momentum and make a legitimate push for the playoffs remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: the Anaheim Ducks are a team on the rise, and they are putting the rest of the league on notice. So, grab your orange and black, and get ready for what promises to be a thrilling season.
