The conference championships were tightly contested battles that saw a Kansas City defensive shutdown and a crazy San Francisco comeback. Now the biggest game of the football season is finally here with the Chiefs defending their Super Bowl crown against the 49ers. Who will win the Super Bowl 54 rematch? It’s time to read and find out!
Super Bowl 58:
The Kansas City Chiefs have made their fourth Super Bowl appearance in just five years and are looking to win their third in the Mahomes era. They will face a similar opponent in the San Francisco 49ers who they took down 31-20 in Super Bowl 54. This time the 49ers come back even stronger and with the best player in the 2023 NFL season, Christian McCaffrey.
The Chiefs are coming off an upset win where they shut down the Ravens offense to only 10 points and held the Baltimore running backs to 23 rushing yards. While the defense was strong in the AFC Championship, the Chiefs must replicate that formula against San Francisco.
Kansas City needs to limit McCaffrey and force Brock Purdy to throw the ball. The Chiefs passing defense is the strongest aspect of this unit as Kansas City allowed the 4th fewest passing yards this season. The Chiefs are also top 10 in lowest completion percentage which favors the Chiefs if they make the Niners more of a passing team in this game.
The Niners need their O-line to hold strong against this Chiefs defensive front. The Chiefs totaled four sacks against Baltimore in the AFC Championship and recorded the second most sacks this season. The Niners need to keep Chiefs defensive linemen, Chris Jones and George Karaliftis in check as they have both recorded over 10 sacks in the season. The Chiefs like to put pressure on their opponents but if the Niners withhold it then San Francisco is in a golden position.
Although the Chiefs defense is very good, their biggest weakness is stopping the run. The Chiefs are not even in the top 15 when it comes to fewest rushing yards allowed and running the ball is the Niners forte.
So far in the playoffs, Christian McCaffrey has torn up the competition as he has rushed for over 90 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in both the divisional round and NFC Championship. McCaffrey has rushed for at least 4.5 per carry in every game since Week 12 against the Seahawks. It is almost certain that McCaffrey will get a good amount of yards with his touches in this game.
The rushing attack also opens up the passing game for the Niners as mvp finalist Brock Purdy has shown up when it mattered most in the last 2 games. The Chiefs have their hands full with receiving threats Geroge Kittle, Brqanodn Ayiuk and Deebo Samuel that Purdy can throw to for a big play.
The Chiefs have the best QB/TE duo with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce who will give the Niners defense problems. The Chiefs secondary can limit these Niners weapons but at the end of the day, Christian McCaffrey is a problem Kansas City doesn’t have the answer for.
The Niners have been so close in the Kyle Shanahan era but this year San Francisco has all the pieces to finally get the monkey off their back. The 49ers should win a close game and claim their 6th Super Bowl in franchise history.
Prediction: 49ers win 28-23
