LOS ANGELES — Forward Sydney Leroux scored the game-winning goal in extra time to lift Angel City FC (6-3-9) to a 2-1 victory Sunday versus Chicago Red Stars (7-2-9) at BMO Stadium.
Leroux’s day started on the bench as a reserve but ended with being the hero for Angel City on Sunday. Subbed in at the 45th minute, Leroux delivered another vintage late-game goal in the 90+1’ minute to secure Angel City’s second consecutive win since returning from the NWSL Olympic break.
Angel City jumped out to an early lead on the foot of 19-year-old forward Alyssa Thompson. In the sixth minute, Thompson placed herself in perfect position to rebound the block shot attempt by Chicago’s goalkeeper Alyssa Naehler and find the back of the net – her third of the season.
Angel City’s aggressiveness in the attacking third was felt throughout the day. Angel City finished with 13 shots on goal, seven on target.
Controlling possession has been critical for Angel City this season. In Sunday’s win, they won the possession battle against Chicago, controlling 57% of ball possession.
Angel City forward Christian Press made her NWSL debut this season, subbing in for. Thompson in the 70th minute.
“I am so proud of her and her recovery,” Leroux said.
Halfway through the season, Angel City is on the edge of a playoff spot. At the ninth spot, Angel City is tied at 21 points with eight-seeded Bay FC.
Including all competitions, Angel City has a three-game winning streak, scoring 11 goals in this span.
Next, Angel City hosts the Seatle Regin (4-9-5) Friday at 7:00 p.m. on Amazon Prime.
