Lakers Fifth Starter Battle Heats Up — Media Day Seven Days Away as LaRavia, Williams, Mamu Lead the Pack

Yesterday was arrival day. Today the purple-and-gold calendar flips to the real fight. On September 21, 2026 — seven days from Media Day on September 28 and eight from training camp on September 29 — the Lakers story is no longer “when does Luka land?” It is who locks the fifth starter next to Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Walker Kessler, and Quentin Grimes.

Those four are the locks. The fifth seat — a power forward / wing hybrid who can defend bigger wings, crash the glass with Kessler, and play off the ball while Luka and Reaves cook — is wide open. Jake LaRavia, Ziaire Williams, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Matisse Thybulle, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Adou Thiero are all in the conversation. Camp tips with 21 bodies. Preseason opens October 5 at Sacramento. The audition clock just started ticking in public.

The Four Locks — and the Job Description for No. 5

Strip away the summer noise and the starting sheet already has a spine. Dončić is the gravity and the late-game decision. Reaves is the complementary creator who can close. Kessler is the rim-protection and lob-finishing bet that reshaped the frontcourt. Grimes brings two-way wing pressure and off-ball threat. That leaves one hole that has to do three hard things at once.

The fifth starter has to switch onto bigger wings without shrinking, help Kessler on the defensive glass, and live off the ball — catch-and-shoot, cut, finish — because Dončić and Reaves already own creation. Size ideally starts around 6-foot-7. Athleticism is not optional when Western Conference wings come hunting. That is why as many as six names can make a case before the first official practice tips.

LaRavia’s Fit Case: Chemistry With Luka and Reaves

Jake LaRavia enters the week as the chemistry candidate. He already logged minutes next to Dončić and Reaves last season, which matters on a roster stacked with new faces. The pitch is scrappy defense, secondary rebounding, and a three-point stroke that needs to bounce back from a second-half fade. If the jumper returns, he complements Kessler on the glass without asking for the ball every trip.

The risk is familiar: when shots cool, defenses sag and the paint crowds around Luka. Redick’s staff will weigh familiarity against upside. Seven days from Media Day, LaRavia’s edge is simple — he already knows how these two creators want to play.

Ziaire Williams: Athleticism, Defense, and Ceiling

Ziaire Williams is the upside swing — length, point-of-attack defense, and wing athleticism that lets Grimes stay on guards while someone else chases the bigger assignment. Reports of added muscle this offseason only sharpen the case: more bulk for bigger wings without losing the recovery speed that creates steals and deflections.

Williams does not need to be a primary creator. He needs to punish help with cutting, finish open threes, and turn defense into easy offense. If camp shows the jumper is real and the motor stays loud, the race stops being “LaRavia by default” and becomes a genuine two-horse fight.

Mamukelashvili’s Spacing Bet — and the Defensive Caution

Sandro Mamukelashvili brings size and spacing that can distort a defense the second he spots up. Put a stretch big next to Kessler and opposing centers cannot camp under the rim while Luka cooks. That offensive picture is why Mamu’s name stays loud.

The counterargument is defensive. A Luka–Mamu–Kessler frontline raises real questions about collective foot speed and matching up with athletic scoring wings. Rim protection and rebounding would look elite with Kessler anchoring; the worry is rotations, ground coverage, and who checks the opponent’s best forward. Spacing versus switchability is why Media Day will ask about Mamu as a starter and as a high-minute bench hammer in the same breath.

    Thybulle, Vanderbilt, Thiero: The Disruptors

Matisse Thybulle is the pure defense wild card — length, instincts, and off-ball disruption that wins possessions without touching the box score. Jarred Vanderbilt remains the connective-tissue option: dive, rebound, switch, finish dirty work so stars stay fresh. Adou Thiero is the young flier whose athleticism could steal camp reps if Redick wants to see upside before Opening Night math hardens.

None of those three needs to win the job on day one to matter. Camp is 21 deep for a reason. Preseason at Sacramento on October 5 is the first public stress test, and somebody from this disruptor tier can still force a rotation shake if the favorites stumble.

Luka’s Arrival Context: ~231 lbs, Hamstring Rehab, One Human Beat

Dončić landed in Los Angeles on September 20 near a reported 231 pounds after the longest basketball break of his career — a Grade 2 hamstring rehab summer that prioritized getting right. The sole No. 1 option is in California; the fifth-starter fight is how the supporting cast proves it can amplify him.

Before he left Slovenia, Dončić posted a short, heartfelt note to his daughters — G+O — saying that no matter where in the world their dad is, they are always in his heart. One human beat before the gym lights take over.

Seven Days to Media Day, Eight to Camp Sneakers

September 28 puts every candidate in front of cameras. September 29 puts them in sneakers. With the camp roster at 21, minutes will be earned in scrimmages, not summer speculation. Redick will chase the best glass partner for Kessler, the cleanest off-ball fit next to Luka and Reaves, and the wing who can survive West matchups without asking for 15 shots a night.

LaRavia offers chemistry. Williams offers ceiling and defense. Mamu offers size and spacing with a defensive caution in a three-big look. Thybulle, Vanderbilt, and Thiero offer disruption and depth pressure. Four locks are set. The fifth starter decides whether this group looks finished or unfinished when the Kings tip on October 5.

What It Means for Purple and Gold

September 21 is battle day, not arrival day. The Lakers fifth starter battle is the loudest story with Media Day seven days away and camp eight days out. Luka, Reaves, Kessler, and Grimes are the locks. LaRavia, Williams, Mamukelashvili, Thybulle, Vanderbilt, and Thiero are the candidates. Luka is already in L.A. near 231 pounds after hamstring rehab. Camp holds 21. Preseason starts October 5 in Sacramento. Cameras September 28. Sneakers September 29. The fifth starter will be decided by who wins the gym.

Does LaRavia’s chemistry hold when threes have to fall? Does Williams’ athleticism win key defensive assignments? Can Mamu’s spacing outweigh frontline speed concerns? Answers start with Media Day soundbites and end with camp reps — seven days, then sneakers, then Sacramento.
