LOS ANGELES, CA– The Kings’ comeback effort fell short in overtime against the Canucks, 3-2.
After trailing by two goals heading into the third period, the Kings needed to rally for the third consecutive game. When Los Angeles scored two goals in the final period, it looked as if the Kings would complete another comeback.
However, momentum would not continue for the Kings in overtime. Conor Garland hit the game-winning goal and sealed the victory for the Canucks.
A slow, physical game where both teams had over 27 hits, should have favored the Kings. Yet, Los Angeles could not capitalize on the opportunities they were given.
The Kings finished with nine more shots on goal, but David Rittich mightily struggled with a .824 save percentage. Despite the Canucks only putting up 17 shots on goal, Rittich allowed three scores.
On the contrary to Rittich, Kevin Lankinen had a superb performance. Lankien saved 24 of 26 shots to accumulate a .923 save percentage.
Penalty kills were another area that the Kings weren’t efficient in. From the two power plays the Canucks had, the Kings allowed a goal. While the Canucks delivered a penalty kill on all four of the Kings’ power-play opportunities.
Garland was the biggest star of the game as he notched two of the three goals for the Canucks. Filip Chytil also contributed with two assists.
In the comeback loss, Adrian Kempe and Warren Foegle each scored a goal to force overtime. Vladislav Gavrikov, Jordan Spence, Quinton Byfield and Jacob Moverare all recorded an assist.
The road for the Kings will become even more battle-tested as they face another contender from the West. This time it’s arguably the most talented team in the Central Division.
On Friday, the Kings will head to Dallas to face off against the Stars. For the Kings to secure the win, they must come out the gates with a strong start.
