Brook Lopez Clippers numbers are the quiet story of the first week: a 38-year-old center coming off the bench has made 64.5 percent of his shots. The Los Angeles Clippers are 1-2 and idle tonight, while the Los Angeles Lakers host the Portland Trail Blazers. The team returns to Intuit Dome on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. PT to face the Lakers again after the 125-117 loss at Crypto.com Arena on Friday, and the frontcourt rotation will matter in that rematch.
Brook Lopez’s three-game line
Lopez was born April 1, 1988, and has come off the bench behind starting center Isaiah Jackson in each of the Clippers’ first three games. The starters every time have been Derrick Jones Jr., Rui Hachimura, Jackson, Kris Dunn and Darius Garland. According to ESPN box scores, here is what Lopez has done in his reserve role:
- Against Sacramento (121-96 win): 27 minutes, 17 points, 7-of-12 shooting, 1-of-3 from three, 11 rebounds, plus-18.
- Against the Lakers (125-117 loss): 20 minutes, 22 points, 8-of-9 shooting, 2-of-2 from three, 4 rebounds.
- Against Oklahoma City (108-101 loss): 23 minutes, 15 points, 5-of-10 shooting, 3-of-6 from three, 1 rebound.
The totals are 54 points on 20-of-31 shooting (64.5 percent), 6-of-11 from three-point range, 16 rebounds and 70 minutes. That works out to 18 points and about 23 minutes per game. For a reserve, it is a high-efficiency profile, and the 22-point night against the Lakers came in only 20 minutes.
The rebounding trend to watch
The scoring has held steady, but the rebounding has slipped each game, from 11 to 4 to 1. That does not mean Lopez is the cause. The Clippers had 49 rebounds against Sacramento, 35 against the Lakers and 38 against Oklahoma City, and the Thunder outrebounded them 46-38 and had 15 offensive rebounds to the Clippers’ eight. It does suggest that his minutes are being used for spacing and shot-making more than board work. Jackson, who played 15, 28 and 24 minutes and scored 13, 6 and 10 points, has grabbed 5, 6 and 6 rebounds.
In the Lakers loss the issue was inside scoring: Los Angeles had 58 points in the paint to the Clippers’ 48. Lopez’s three-point shooting can pull an opposing center out of the lane, but the box score cannot tell us how much rim protection the Clippers lose when he replaces Jackson, and that is a fair question to ask about the rematch.
Here is how the two centers compare across the same three games:
- Lopez: 70 minutes, 54 points, 16 rebounds.
- Jackson: 67 minutes, 29 points, 17 rebounds.
The two have played almost identical minutes, and Lopez has scored nearly twice as much while Jackson has grabbed one more rebound. That is the clearest sign of how the roles split: Lopez is the scorer, and Jackson is the rebounder and the one who starts.
Why the depth chart is thin
The Clippers’ injury list is long, and several of the players who would help the frontcourt are out. The estimated return dates below come from secondary tracking sites, so treat them as estimates and not team announcements:
- Bradley Beal, right knee: estimated return Nov. 8.
- Brandon Ingram, right heel (SI.com described it as a partially torn Achilles): estimated return Nov. 8.
- Max Strus, partially torn plantar fascia in the right foot: estimated return Nov. 8.
- Yanic Konan Niederhauser, foot: estimated return Nov. 8.
- Jordan Miller, left rotator cuff surgery: out until about March 2, 2027.
Niederhauser is the one that matters for this piece. He would normally be competing for minutes behind Jackson and Lopez. With him out, the Clippers have used forward Baba Miller as a small-minutes option. Miller played nine minutes against Sacramento, did not play against the Lakers and logged two minutes at Oklahoma City. The Infanity TV clip above shows his first career NBA basket, according to its title.
What the Clippers have to solve
There are two ways to read the Lopez usage. One is that coach Tyronn Lue is protecting a veteran by capping him in the low-to-mid 20-minute range. The other is that the Clippers are choosing Jackson’s mobility for starts and bringing Lopez in for offense. We do not have a 2026-27 quote from Lue explaining the reasoning, so this is an interpretation based only on the box scores and not a confirmed plan.
What the box scores do show is that Lopez has been productive in every minute he has played. He was plus-18 in 27 minutes in the opener, and he scored 22 points on nine shot attempts against the Lakers. We have not checked closing-lineup data, so whether Lue trusts him in the final minutes is an open question.
The upcoming schedule
The Clippers had Monday and Tuesday off, which gave them extra practice time before the rematch, while the Lakers play Portland tonight. After Wednesday, the schedule includes two road games in three days:
- Wednesday, Oct. 28: vs. Lakers at Intuit Dome, 7:30 p.m. PT.
- Friday, Oct. 30: at Minnesota Timberwolves, 5 p.m. PT (NBA Cup group play).
- Sunday, Nov. 1: at Golden State Warriors, 5:30 p.m. PT.
- Monday, Nov. 2: vs. Toronto Raptors at Intuit Dome, 7 p.m. PT.
The Nov. 1 game is the first after daylight saving time ends, so it falls on Pacific Standard Time. If the Nov. 8 estimates for the injured players hold, the rematch and the next three games would all be played without them, and Lopez and Jackson would carry the center minutes through that whole stretch.
Lopez’s outside shot is a second layer to the story. He has attempted 11 threes in three games, about 3.7 per night, and made six. With Bradley Beal, Brandon Ingram and Max Strus all out, a center who can space the floor is an offensive need as much as a choice.
Four things to watch Wednesday
- Lopez’s minutes. If he stays near 23 minutes, he is a bench scorer. If he reaches 28 or more, the Clippers are using him as a co-starter.
- The paint battle. The Lakers had a 58-48 edge in the Oct. 23 game, and the Clippers need to close that gap without sacrificing their own offense.
- Baba Miller. If the Clippers need a third big man, his minutes will show how much trust Lue has in him.
- Rebounding. The Clippers have given up 15 offensive rebounds to Oklahoma City, and the Lakers have the personnel to exploit it.
Notes and conflicts
The injury return dates above come from secondary sources and have not been confirmed by the Clippers. SI.com describes Ingram’s injury as a partially torn Achilles, which differs from the right heel designation used by the tracking sites, so we list both. Lopez’s age and the starting lineups come from the box scores and public player data. Starting lineups for Wednesday were not official at publication time. We have not used earlier Lue comments about Lopez, because those date to a previous season.
