It is game day at Crypto.com Arena. Kings vs Panthers drops the puck at 7 p.m. PT tonight in the 2026-27 home opener, with ESPN carrying it nationally. Los Angeles is 0-1-1. Florida is 1-0-2 and finishing a season-opening road trip one night after an overtime loss in Anaheim. Monday’s practice in El Segundo added real news: Mats Zuccarello took a maintenance day, Kevin Fiala was back on the ice in his rehab, and Peter Laviolette said the lineup was still being worked out.
Our Monday preview covered the lessons from the first two games and the full festivities list. This is the game-day update.
Kings vs Panthers: What Changed at Monday’s Practice
Everyone was on the ice Monday except Zuccarello. Laviolette described his absence as routine. “It was just a maintenance day for him today,” he said, according to LA Kings Insider’s Zach Dooley. “I don’t expect anything, sometimes players just need a minute.” Zuccarello is 39 and missed time in camp with a shoulder injury. Dooley’s expectation was that he plays tonight, but that is not confirmed.
The bigger lineup question is the structure. The Kings dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen in San Jose, and Laviolette sounded happy with it. “We’re working through the lineup right now, with what we’re going to do tomorrow, but certainly, I thought the 11-7 worked well the other night,” he said.
With Zuccarello out, Dooley’s best read of Monday’s rushes was not a true alignment. It looked like this:
- Forwards: Panarin–Byfield–Kempe; Moore–Haula–Armia; Lee–Turcotte–Laferriere; Laughton–Helenius–Perry
- Defense: Dumoulin–Doughty; Gustafsson–Clarke; Anderson–Ceci; Edmundson
- Goalies: Kuemper and Forsberg
If Zuccarello plays, Dooley expected no other changes from San Jose. Treat the lines as a practice snapshot until the morning skate or warmups.
Fiala Back on the Ice
Kevin Fiala skated Monday with Director of Performance and Sports Science John Odgers, the first step in his return. Dooley reported it was not his first skate. Ken Holland’s camp timeline was about a week per stage, with the hope that Fiala rejoins the group in a red non-contact jersey by mid-October and could be ready to play around the start of November.
“He’s still working his way back and there’s always a progression to it,” Laviolette said. “Then, a player may work himself into a red jersey in practice and try to get some timing and just get out on the ice. Then maybe they can lose that red jersey and get into some [additional drills]. So, there’s a path to it.” Fiala will not play tonight.
Starting Goalie: Not Yet Confirmed
As of Tuesday morning, the Kings had not named tonight’s starter. Darcy Kuemper started the opener in Colorado, and Anton Forsberg started Saturday in San Jose. Both were on the ice Monday.
The projections disagree. Edgehalla’s model lists Kuemper as the probable starter at about 78 percent. Puckfeed’s rule-based pick names Forsberg, based on its formula of recent starts, and says plainly that it is “our rule, not the team’s word.” Neither is a confirmation. Expect the answer after the morning skate, when the first goalie off the ice is typically the starter. Florida’s probable starter is Jacob Markstrom, per Edgehalla, after he made 18 saves in Anaheim.
The Top Line Driving the Offense
The Kings scored four goals in each of their first two games, and the top line was the reason in San Jose. Artemi Panarin, Quinton Byfield and Adrian Kempe each scored. At 5-on-5 with the three of them on the ice, the Kings had 20 shot attempts to four against, per Natural Stat Trick data cited by Dooley.
“I thought their game was on point, they created the entire night,” Laviolette said. “QB, Bread and Kemps were really, I thought, pretty dynamic and generated an awful lot for us.”
Panarin credited his linemates’ speed. “Two pretty fast hockey players, which makes the puck on our side more, because they win lots of battles and they forecheck very well,” he said. “I try being fast too, but I’m not that fast, so I’ve got to start earlier by a second, that’s all.” Kempe added: “We’re moving the puck, we’re moving the feet, forechecking, all that kind of stuff.”
Kings vs Panthers: Florida’s Lineup Picture
Florida is without captain Aleksander Barkov, who is on long-term injured reserve, and Aaron Ekblad, who is on maternity leave, according to Florida Hockey Now. Dmitry Kulikov moved up into Ekblad’s spot, and Paul Maurice said Monday that some players, including Sam Reinhart, are in new positions. Brad Marchand is two games into a comeback after August surgery and said he is still finding his timing.
Maurice had a scouting report on the Kings after Monday’s practice at the arena. “They look fast,” he said. “Pete Laviolette does a real good job getting his teams to play at pace. They’re really, really, aggressive. It looks like Nashville did when he was there. Certainly, they’re a strong team now. Play fast.”
He was also calm about his own team. “What I liked truly is our game hasn’t changed much,” Maurice said. Florida played Sunday night in Anaheim and has one day of rest; the Kings have had two days off since San Jose.
