Tipoff is here. The Lakers preseason opener tips at 7 p.m. PT tonight at Golden 1 Center against the Sacramento Kings, with Spectrum SportsNet carrying the game. After a week of camp in El Segundo, JJ Redick still has not named who will dress or who will start. Availability stays unsettled until the pregame pressers, which is the new information heading into Monday night.
This is a game-day look at what is actually new since our weekend preview and Saturday practice report: the availability hold, Luka Doncic’s minutes plan, the brutal early schedule, the first live answers on the open starting spots and what Sacramento is debuting on the other side.
Lakers Preseason Opener: Availability Still Unannounced
Preseason teams do not have to file injury reports. As of Monday morning, Redick had not released a player list. On Saturday he said the staff was “still working stuff,” and Sunday’s session did not produce a public announcement either. Silver Screen and Roll’s Jacob Rude wrote Monday that fans almost certainly will not know who is in and who is out until the coaches speak before tip.
That matters more than usual because of the calendar. Tonight is the front end of a back-to-back. The Lakers play at Golden State on Tuesday, then host Sacramento again on Thursday. Redick has already flagged the three-games-in-four-nights stretch as less than ideal. In past preseasons, the Lakers often gave their stars only one of those three nights. With a younger, newer roster this year, that precedent may change, but it still points to staggered minutes rather than a full-strength 48.
No formal injury list means the “couple guys” Redick has modified all week remain unnamed. Treat any social-media speculation as unverified until the team speaks.
Luka Doncic: He Will Play in the Preseason. Tonight’s Minutes Are TBD
Redick has been clear that Doncic will play exhibition basketball. He has been equally clear that the point is rhythm and lineup balance, not a heavy workload. “I think the biggest thing for the preseason games is getting into a rhythm, finding some lineup balance, getting into shape and feeling good about yourself and the guys you’re playing with versus playing him 36 minutes and trying to win a game against another team’s G League team in the fourth quarter,” Redick said last week.
Khobi Price of the California Post noted that Doncic typically plays two or three preseason games a year. Last season he appeared in two of six. This summer he did not play for Slovenia, so this is his longest stretch without competitive basketball since he entered the NBA, coming after the hamstring injury that ended his 2025-26 season in early April. Price also wrote that the new cast around him could push the staff toward more shared reps than usual. None of that locks in a minute total for tonight. Expect a short leash if he plays, and do not assume he plays both ends of the back-to-back.
Austin Reaves is in a similar boat. He played four preseason games in each of the last two years when the Lakers scheduled six. With five games this year and a new supporting cast, his availability is also a night-by-night decision.
What the First Live Lineup Will Answer
Doncic, Reaves and Walker Kessler remain the safest starting bets. Everything else has been an open competition since Day 1. Tonight is the first time those battles face another team’s scouting report.
- The open wing and forward spots: Quentin Grimes, Jake LaRavia, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, Jarred Vanderbilt and Adou Thiero have all been in the conversation. The first five is not a permanent commitment, but it shows who has the early edge after a week of live play.
- Full-court pressure: Camp praise for wing defense only counts if it shows up against Sacramento’s ballhandlers. Watch who picks up full court and who stays attached in the half court.
- Kessler’s range: Reporters saw him work catch-and-shoot threes and pick-and-pops late in Saturday’s practice. Whether he attempts one in game action is a real subplot after years of near-zero volume.
- Collin Sexton’s first look: Sexton is on the roster and has not played an official minute in purple and gold. How quickly Redick trusts him with the ball next to Doncic or Reaves is worth tracking from the tip.
- Two-way minutes: Redick’s Saturday praise of Chris Mañon, Arthur Kaluma and AK Okereke set up a second-half test. If they play, it will likely be after the starters have their look.
Redick also said the weekend practices kept cleaning up offense after Thursday’s extended scrimmage. He has already installed “one of Luka’s plays” and said the group “ran that to death in our scrimmage today and scored every time.” Individual packages for the primary creators are part of the plan. “We’ll have a package for each guy,” he said. “I think overall, the goal is just a little more variance right now in early offense.” Tonight is the first chance to see which of those packages survive contact.
Knecht and the Roster Crunch: Still No Move
Dalton Knecht is still on the roster and practicing. There has been no trade or waiver announcement since our Day 3 report on the 16-to-15 crunch. His minutes tonight, if he gets any, are the next data point for the front office and for rival scouts watching the first live tape. Do not invent a decision that has not been made.
Scouting Sacramento on Game Day
The Kings are also opening their preseason. Doug Christie has not confirmed a starting five, but widely projected groups put rookie point guard Darius Acuff Jr. next to Zach LaVine, De’Andre Hunter, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis. Ben Simmons is expected to handle the ball when Acuff sits. For the Lakers, that means the first look at Acuff’s pace and Simmons’ playmaking in the same night, plus a Sacramento group that wants to prove last season’s 22-60 mark was an injury-driven outlier.
The teams meet again Thursday at Crypto.com Arena, so neither coach is likely to empty the playbook. Still, Christie has stressed accountability and detail in camp, and a home crowd for a preseason opener usually brings more energy than a typical exhibition.
