Los Angeles Kings 2026-27 Season Preview: Roster Overhaul, Offseason Moves, and Playoff Aspirations

The Los Angeles Kings are gearing up for the 2026-27 NHL season with a renewed sense of purpose and a significantly retooled roster. After a first-round exit in the Western Conference Playoffs last season, General Manager Ken Holland wasted no time in making sweeping changes. The most notable shift comes behind the bench, where Peter Laviolette takes the reins as head coach, tasked with igniting an offense that struggled with consistency. The retirement of legendary captain Anze Kopitar marks the end of a storied chapter, but the Kings have aggressively pursued veteran talent and young stars to fill the void. With a blend of proven scorers, emerging prospects, and a steadfast defense, the Kings are determined to push deeper into the postseason.

The Dawn of the Peter Laviolette Era

The hiring of Peter Laviolette as the 32nd head coach in Kings franchise history signals a clear mandate: the Kings want to score, and they want to win now. Laviolette, the seventh-winningest coach in NHL history, brings a wealth of experience and a Stanley Cup pedigree (2006 with Carolina) to Los Angeles. His offensive-minded system is expected to be a stark contrast to the more rigid structures of the past, aiming to unlock the full potential of a forward group brimming with talent.

Laviolette’s arrival is timely. The Kings ranked in the bottom five in goals scored last season, a glaring weakness that ultimately cost them in the playoffs. They were heavily reliant on a few key contributors and often found themselves unable to generate secondary scoring. Laviolette’s history of maximizing offensive output—most notably with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals—provides a blueprint for how he might revitalize the Kings’ attack. The focus will be on faster transitions, more aggressive forechecking, and capitalizing on power-play opportunities, an area where the Kings also struggled last season.

Roster Overhaul: Filling the Void Left by Kopitar

The offseason was defined by the retirement of Anze Kopitar, a franchise icon who spent 20 seasons in Los Angeles, capturing two Stanley Cups and leaving as the team’s all-time points leader. Replacing a player of Kopitar’s caliber—both in terms of production and leadership—is an impossible task for a single individual. Instead, the Kings have opted for a collective approach, bringing in a mix of seasoned veterans and leaning on their developing youth.

    Key Free Agent Acquisitions

The Kings were active on July 1st, securing several key pieces to bolster their forward depth and add experience to the lineup:

    • Mats Zuccarello: The 38-year-old winger signed a one-year contract, bringing his exceptional playmaking abilities to Los Angeles. Zuccarello nearly averaged a point per game with the Minnesota Wild last season (54 points in 59 games) and possesses elite offensive zone instincts. His addition provides a significant boost to the top six and the power play.
    • Erik Haula: Signed to a two-year deal, the 35-year-old center adds crucial depth down the middle. Haula, who recorded 38 points with the Nashville Predators last year, is a versatile two-way forward capable of playing in all situations.
    • Corey Perry: The 41-year-old veteran returns for his second stint with the Kings on a one-year deal. Perry brings grit, playoff experience, and a knack for scoring timely goals, adding a necessary physical edge to the bottom six.
    • Erik Gustafsson: To shore up the blue line, the Kings added the 34-year-old defenseman on a one-year contract. Gustafsson provides a puck-moving presence and power-play utility.

These additions, combined with the mid-season acquisition of Scott Laughton (who signed a three-year extension), demonstrate a clear strategy: surround the core with experienced, productive veterans who can contribute immediately.

    The Artemi Panarin Factor

Perhaps the most significant offensive weapon for the Kings this season is Artemi Panarin. Acquired from the New York Rangers prior to the 2026 trade deadline, the “Breadman” made an immediate impact, tallying 27 points in 26 games for Los Angeles. Now, with a full training camp and a two-year extension in place, Panarin is poised to be the offensive catalyst the Kings desperately need.

Panarin has been a point-per-game player for nearly a decade, and his elite vision and scoring touch make him a threat every time he touches the puck. He is expected to anchor the top line and serve as the primary distributor on the first power-play unit. The chemistry he develops with his linemates—likely Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield—will be critical to the Kings’ success. If Panarin can replicate the 120-point season he had under Laviolette three years ago, the Kings’ offensive woes could become a thing of the past.

    The Emergence of Quinton Byfield

While the veterans provide stability, the ceiling of the 2026-27 Los Angeles Kings may ultimately be determined by Quinton Byfield. The former second-overall pick is coming off his third consecutive 20-goal season, but the organization is looking for him to take the next step and establish himself as a true top-line center.

Byfield’s development has been steady, if occasionally inconsistent. He finished the 2025-26 season exceptionally strong, registering 16 points in his final 16 games and showcasing his elite skating and puck-transporting abilities. He led the team in controlled zone entries and exits, highlighting his importance in transition. However, he struggled with offensive consistency earlier in the year and will need to improve his performance in the faceoff circle, especially with Kopitar no longer taking the toughest defensive assignments.

Now 24 years old and armed with a new five-year contract, Byfield is expected to be the focal point of the Kings’ offense. If he can maintain the level of play he demonstrated down the stretch last season and consistently drive play against top opposition, the Kings will possess a formidable one-two punch down the middle.

    Fortifying the Blue Line

The Kings’ defense remains a strength, anchored by the enduring presence of Drew Doughty. Entering the final year of his eight-year contract, the 36-year-old Doughty continues to log heavy minutes and match up against the league’s best. While his individual offensive numbers dipped last season, his underlying possession metrics remained strong, indicating his continued effectiveness in controlling the pace of the game.

The future of the blue line is also secure, thanks to the recent five-year, $37 million contract extension signed by Brandt Clarke. The 23-year-old defenseman is coming off a breakout season where he recorded 40 points and established himself as a premier offensive defenseman. Clarke is expected to quarterback the first power-play unit alongside Panarin and Kempe, providing a dynamic threat from the point.

The Kings also have promising prospects pushing for roster spots, notably Henry Brzustewicz, the 2025 first-round pick who had a stellar season in the OHL. The depth on defense, combining the experience of Doughty and the dynamic potential of Clarke, gives the Kings a solid foundation to build upon.

Schedule Highlights and the Road Ahead

The Kings will open their 2026-27 campaign on the road against the Colorado Avalanche on September 30th. They will return to Crypto.com Arena for their home opener on October 6th, hosting the defending Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers.

The schedule presents several unique challenges, including 10 back-to-back sets and a grueling seven-game road trip stretching from late January into early February. The stretch run will be particularly demanding, with the Kings playing 31 games in the final 62 days of the season. Navigating this condensed schedule will test the depth and resilience of the roster, making the veteran additions all the more crucial.

    Playoff Aspirations and Final Thoughts

The Los Angeles Kings enter the 2026-27 season with legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations. The front office has aggressively addressed the team’s offensive shortcomings by bringing in a proven, offensive-minded coach in Peter Laviolette and adding established scorers like Mats Zuccarello and Erik Haula to complement Artemi Panarin and Adrian Kempe.

The success of the season will hinge on several key factors: Can Laviolette successfully implement his system and revitalize the power play? Will Quinton Byfield elevate his game to become a dominant first-line center? Can the veteran additions provide the necessary secondary scoring and leadership?

If these pieces fall into place, the Kings possess the talent, depth, and experience to be a major force in the Western Conference. The foundation is set, the roster is retooled, and the expectations are high. The 2026-27 season promises to be a thrilling ride for Kings fans as the team looks to translate their offseason maneuvers into deep playoff success.
