LA Kings 2026-27 Season Preview: Roster Overhaul, Laviolette’s Vision, and the Post-Kopitar Landscape

The Los Angeles Kings are entering a profound period of transition as they prepare for the 2026-27 NHL season. Following a disappointing first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche, where the team was swept and managed only five goals in four games, significant changes were necessary. The offseason has brought a wave of new faces, a new coaching staff, and the monumental task of replacing a franchise legend. As the Kings navigate this critical juncture, fans and analysts alike are scrutinizing the roster moves, evaluating the coaching shift, and anticipating the challenges that lie ahead.

The Departure of a Legend: Life After Anze Kopitar

The most significant narrative surrounding the LA Kings this offseason is undoubtedly the retirement of Anze Kopitar. After 20 illustrious seasons, all spent in Los Angeles, the 38-year-old captain announced his departure from the game following the 2025-26 campaign. Kopitar’s legacy is etched in Kings history; he retires as the franchise’s all-time leader in points, with 1,316 (452 goals, 864 assists) in 1,521 games. He was the cornerstone of the team’s two Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014 and served as captain for his final decade.

Replacing Kopitar is not merely about finding a player to fill a roster spot; it’s about addressing a massive void in leadership, two-way play, and offensive production. General Manager Ken Holland acknowledged the impossibility of a one-to-one replacement. “You lose ‘Kopi,’ you’re not going to fill that role; leadership, play everything that comes into it,” Holland noted. The strategy, therefore, has shifted from finding a single successor to building depth down the middle to collectively absorb the responsibilities previously shouldered by their legendary captain.

Free Agency Frenzy: Loading Up on Veterans to Boost Offense

The Kings’ primary objective entering the free agency period was clear: increase offensive output. Finishing 29th in the league in goals per game (2.68) and 28th on the power play (17.0 percent) during the 2025-26 regular season highlighted a glaring deficiency. To address this, Holland targeted veteran forwards on short-term, cap-friendly deals.

The headline acquisitions included centers Erik Haula and Scott Laughton. Haula, 35, signed a two-year, $3.6 million AAV contract after a solid 38-point season with the Nashville Predators. Laughton, 32, was re-signed to a three-year, $3.5 million AAV deal, solidifying his role after being acquired at the trade deadline. These moves were directly aimed at fortifying the center position in Kopitar’s absence. “With Kopitar retiring, trying to replace his minutes down the middle was a priority,” Holland explained, hoping that Haula and Laughton will provide the necessary depth.

To inject more playmaking ability, the Kings signed 38-year-old winger Mats Zuccarello to a one-year, $1 million contract (plus bonuses). Zuccarello’s vision and passing ability, demonstrated by his 54 points in 59 games with the Minnesota Wild last season, make him a valuable asset, particularly on the power play. Furthermore, the return of 41-year-old Corey Perry on a one-year deal adds grit and playoff experience. Perry had a productive stint with the Kings last season before a trade to Tampa Bay, and his presence in the locker room will be crucial for a team in transition.

Defensive Adjustments and the Brandt Clarke Extension

While the focus was heavily on the forward group, the Kings also made strategic moves on the blue line. The most significant development was securing the future of their defensive core by signing 23-year-old Brandt Clarke to a five-year contract extension worth $37 million ($7.4 million AAV). Clarke is coming off a breakout season, setting career highs in points (40), goals (8), and assists (32). He is expected to anchor the top pairing and run the first power-play unit alongside stars like Artemi Panarin and Adrian Kempe. Locking up Clarke long-term is a foundational move for the franchise.

To complement the youth of Clarke and Mikey Anderson, the Kings added veteran depth by signing Erik Gustafsson to a one-year, $1 million contract. Gustafsson brings puck-moving ability and familiarity with the new coaching staff, offering a reliable option for the second power-play unit. These defensive tweaks aim to provide better support for the goaltending tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg, who will be looking to bounce back from an inconsistent 2025-26 campaign.

The Laviolette Era Begins: A Shift in Philosophy

Perhaps the most transformative change for the LA Kings is behind the bench. Peter Laviolette, the seventh-winningest coach in NHL history, was hired to replace interim coach D.J. Smith. Laviolette brings a wealth of experience and a distinct coaching philosophy that contrasts sharply with the defensive-minded approach that has characterized the Kings for much of the past decade.

Laviolette’s teams are historically known for their aggressive, offensive-minded style. “There has to be a plan to attack, and we’ll work on that,” Laviolette stated during his introductory press conference. This shift is precisely what the Kings need to revitalize their stagnant offense. The additions to his coaching staff further emphasize this goal. Associate coach Phil Housley, a Hall of Fame defenseman known for his offensive prowess, and assistant coach Ray Whitney, a prolific scorer during his playing days, will be tasked with overhauling the power play and instilling a more dynamic offensive system.

The combination of Laviolette’s system, the veteran additions, and a full season of Artemi Panarin—who was acquired mid-season and tallied 27 points in 26 games for LA—creates an intriguing offensive dynamic. The Kings are banking on this new philosophy to unlock the potential of players like Quinton Byfield and Kevin Fiala, who will be crucial to the team’s success.

Projected Line Combinations and Cap Outlook

As training camp approaches, the projected line combinations offer a glimpse into Laviolette’s strategy. The top line is expected to feature Artemi Panarin, Quinton Byfield, and Adrian Kempe, forming a potent offensive trio. The second line could see Kevin Fiala paired with new arrivals Erik Haula and Mats Zuccarello, providing secondary scoring depth. The bottom six will likely be anchored by Scott Laughton and Corey Perry, bringing energy and defensive responsibility.

On the defensive side, Mikey Anderson and Drew Doughty are projected to remain a steadfast pairing, while Joel Edmundson and the newly extended Brandt Clarke will form a dynamic second duo. The third pairing will likely consist of Brian Dumoulin and Cody Ceci, offering veteran stability.

From a salary cap perspective, General Manager Ken Holland has navigated a tight situation. The short-term, low-AAV contracts given to Zuccarello, Perry, and Gustafsson were essential to staying compliant. The Kings are currently operating very close to the cap ceiling, leaving little room for mid-season adjustments unless trades are made to clear space. The structure of Zuccarello’s contract, which includes significant performance bonuses, is a calculated risk that could impact the team’s cap situation in the following season.

Looking Ahead: The 2026-27 Schedule and Expectations

The NHL has released the schedule for the 2026-27 season, and the LA Kings face a challenging start. They will open their campaign on the road against the Colorado Avalanche on September 30, a rematch of the team that unceremoniously eliminated them from the playoffs just months prior. This opening matchup will serve as an immediate litmus test for Laviolette’s new system and the revamped roster.

The expectations for the Kings this season are complex. They are a team caught between contending and rebuilding, possessing a mix of aging veterans and promising young talent. The loss of Anze Kopitar is a monumental hurdle, but the front office has taken decisive steps to mitigate the impact. If the new coaching staff can successfully implement their offensive philosophy and the veteran additions can provide the necessary scoring punch, the Kings have the potential to return to the playoffs and perhaps make a deeper run.

However, the Western Conference remains highly competitive, and the Kings will need consistent performances from their core players and significant contributions from their young stars to succeed. The 2026-27 season will be a defining chapter in the history of the Los Angeles Kings, as they navigate the post-Kopitar era and strive to establish a new identity under Peter Laviolette.
