The Ultimate LA Kings 2026 Offseason Guide: Roster Moves, Previews, and What to Expect

The Los Angeles Kings are heading into the 2026-27 NHL season with significant changes and heightened expectations. Following a disappointing first-round exit against the Colorado Avalanche in the 2025-26 playoffs, the front office has made calculated moves to revamp the roster, inject veteran leadership, and redefine the team’s identity. This comprehensive guide breaks down the offseason updates, roster news, and what fans can expect as the Kings prepare for opening night.

Offseason Updates: Shaking Up the Roster

The Kings’ offseason was marked by a series of strategic acquisitions and notable departures. The retirement of longtime captain Anze Kopitar after 20 seasons left a massive void in both leadership and production. Kopitar, the franchise’s all-time points leader with 1,316 points in 1,521 games, guided the team to two Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014, and leaves behind a legacy that will be difficult to replace.

To address the void and bolster the lineup, General Manager Ken Holland orchestrated several key moves during the 2026 offseason. The most significant was the acquisition of superstar winger Artemi Panarin via trade. Signed for two more years at an $11 million AAV, Panarin brings elite playmaking and scoring ability to the top line, providing a much-needed offensive spark alongside center Quinton Byfield and winger Adrian Kempe.

On the free agent front, the Kings signed veteran forward Mats Zuccarello to a one-year contract at just $1 million base salary. Zuccarello, who tallied 54 points in 59 games with the Minnesota Wild last season, adds significant value on the power play — an area where the Kings desperately needed improvement. The 38-year-old was nearly a point-per-game player last season, making this one of the most team-friendly signings of the entire offseason across the league.

Seeking depth down the middle following Kopitar’s retirement, Los Angeles inked center Erik Haula to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million AAV. Haula’s reliable two-way play and penalty-killing prowess make him an ideal fit for the third line. The Kings also brought back fan favorite Corey Perry on a one-year contract. Perry’s grit, net-front presence, and playoff experience proved valuable during his brief stint with the team last season before being traded to Tampa Bay, and the door was always open for his return.

    Roster News: Securing the Future

While adding veteran talent, the Kings also prioritized their young core. The most significant move was signing defenseman Brandt Clarke to a five-year contract extension worth $7.4 million annually through the 2030-31 season. Clarke had a breakout 2025-26 campaign, leading all Kings defensemen with 40 points (8 goals, 32 assists) in 82 games. He also led the NHL with 170 blocked shots at 5-on-5, showcasing his immense two-way potential. This extension solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the franchise’s blue line for years to come.

The development of forward Quinton Byfield remains a focal point. Byfield finished second on the team in scoring last season with 49 points (24 goals, 25 assists) while averaging 20 minutes per game. While his progression has been steady — posting three consecutive 20-goal seasons — the organization and fans are looking for him to take the next step and become a dominant force offensively under new coach Peter Laviolette’s system.

In the 2026 NHL Draft, the Kings selected forward Elton Hermansson with the 19th overall pick. Hermansson, drafted out of Modo Hockey in Sweden, brings size and skill to the prospect pool. The Kings also signed him to a three-year entry-level contract shortly after the draft, further strengthening the team’s future outlook. Defensive prospect Henry Brzustewicz, selected 31st overall in 2025, is also expected to challenge for a roster spot this season after posting 54 points in 59 OHL games.

New Head Coach: Peter Laviolette Takes the Reins

Perhaps the most transformative change of the offseason was the hiring of Peter Laviolette as head coach on June 9. The seventh-winningest coach in NHL history, Laviolette brings a wealth of experience and a track record of success. In 23 seasons behind the bench with six different franchises, he holds an 846-562-161 record and led the Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2006, reaching the Final with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 and the Nashville Predators in 2017.

Laviolette’s arrival signals a philosophical shift for the Kings. Under multiple previous coaches, Los Angeles built its identity around a defense-first, grinding style of play. Laviolette is known for his offensive-minded systems, and with weapons like Panarin, Zuccarello, Kevin Fiala, and Kempe now on the roster, the Kings have the personnel to execute that vision. New assistant coaches Phil Housley and Ray Whitney — both elite offensive players in their careers — are expected to revamp the power play, which was a significant weakness last season.

    Game Previews: The Road Ahead

The 2026-27 regular season kicks off earlier than usual, with the Kings facing a challenging early schedule. They open the season on the road against the Colorado Avalanche on September 29 — an immediate opportunity for redemption following last year’s 4-0 playoff sweep. The Kings also lost their 2025-26 regular season opener to Colorado, making this a highly motivated early matchup.

The home opener is set for October 6 against the Florida Panthers, promising an electric atmosphere at Crypto.com Arena. The schedule features crucial Pacific Division matchups and a demanding stretch in March that will likely dictate the team’s playoff positioning. This will also be the first NHL regular season to begin in September since 2007-08, as the league returns to an 84-game format for the first time since 1993-94.

    Post-Game Reviews: Reflecting on 2025-26

Looking back at the 2025-26 season, the Kings demonstrated resilience but ultimately fell short of their ultimate goal. Finishing fourth in the Pacific Division with a 35-27-20 record, the team struggled with consistency and special teams execution throughout the year. The penalty kill was a persistent problem, and the power play ranked among the worst in the league.

The playoff series against the Avalanche highlighted areas needing improvement. The Kings were swept 4-0, struggling to contain Colorado’s high-powered offense and failing to generate sufficient scoring chances of their own. This early exit underscored the necessity for the offseason changes that followed, including the coaching change and the aggressive pursuit of offensive talent.

Despite the disappointment, individual performances provided silver linings. Adrian Kempe led the team in scoring, while Brandt Clarke’s emergence as an offensive catalyst on the blue line was a major positive. Clarke’s 40-point season and league-leading blocked shot totals made him one of the most complete defensemen in the Western Conference.

    The Drew Doughty Situation

One of the more surprising storylines of the offseason involves veteran defenseman Drew Doughty. General Manager Ken Holland confirmed that the Kings will not sign Doughty to a contract extension this summer. Doughty, who has one year remaining on his current deal, will play out the 2026-27 season before his future is addressed. This decision adds an element of uncertainty to the blue line and will be a storyline to monitor throughout the year. Doughty remains one of the most decorated defensemen in franchise history, having won two Stanley Cups with the Kings.

Looking Ahead: Can the Kings Contend?

The Los Angeles Kings are entering a pivotal season. With a revamped roster, a new head coach, and a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging young talent, the expectations are high. The additions of Panarin, Zuccarello, and Haula, coupled with the continued development of Clarke and Byfield, provide a strong foundation for success. The projected lineup — with Panarin centering alongside Byfield and Kempe on the top line — is arguably the most offensively gifted the Kings have iced in years.

As the team navigates the challenges of the 2026-27 schedule, fans can anticipate a dynamic and entertaining brand of hockey. The goal is clear: return to the playoffs and make a deep run. With the pieces in place and a proven winner behind the bench, the Kings are poised to make significant noise in the Western Conference.
