Purple Reign: Inside the LA Kings’ Bold New Look and the Five Prospects Who Could Define Their Future

The Los Angeles Kings are a franchise in transition. As the 2026-27 NHL season approaches, the organization finds itself balancing the immediate demands of a win-now roster with the undeniable reality that their core is aging. General Manager Ken Holland and newly appointed Head Coach Peter Laviolette have spent the summer reshaping the lineup, adding veteran presence and offensive firepower. Yet, the most compelling storylines emerging from El Segundo this week have less to do with the established stars and more to do with the aesthetic and athletic future of the team.

From the highly anticipated return of a beloved color scheme to the unveiling of the organization’s top-tier prospects, the Kings are preparing to turn the page. This week, the hockey world received a glimpse into what that future looks like, both on the ice and in the rafters.

The Return of Forum Blue: The “Hometown Remix” Jersey

For years, a vocal segment of the Los Angeles Kings fanbase has clamored for a return to the franchise’s roots. The silver and black era, ushered in by Wayne Gretzky and cemented by two Stanley Cup championships, is undeniably iconic. However, the original “Forum Blue” (purple) and gold holds a special place in the hearts of long-time supporters.

This week, reports surfaced confirming that the Kings will indeed be introducing a new purple jersey for the 2026-27 season. This initiative is part of a league-wide NHL program expected to be marketed as the “Hometown Remix” (HTR) collection.

According to sources close to the organization, the new sweater will feature a purple shell accented with black, purple, and gold. Crucially, the design is expected to draw heavy inspiration from the 1988-era crest and shield, rather than the polarizing “Burger King” alternate jersey from the mid-1990s.

The inclusion of black alongside the traditional purple and gold is a fascinating design choice. It bridges the gap between the franchise’s two most distinct eras, offering a modern interpretation of a classic look. While some purists may have preferred a strict recreation of the 1970s uniforms, this hybrid approach aligns with the “remix” concept of the NHL’s new program.

The reaction among the fanbase has been predictably passionate. Social media platforms have been flooded with mock-ups and debates, with many expressing excitement over the return of purple to the primary rotation. The official unveiling, expected later this summer or early fall, will undoubtedly be a major event for the organization.

The Next Wave: Ranking the Kings’ Top 5 Prospects

While the new jerseys will change how the Kings look, the organization’s prospect pool will determine how they play in the years to come. This week, the highly respected MayorsManor released the final installment of their 2026 LA Kings Prospect Rankings, detailing the top five players in the system.

It is important to note that these rankings were finalized in May, prior to the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. Therefore, recent selections like first-round pick Elton Hermansson are not included. Nevertheless, the list provides a comprehensive look at the talent waiting in the wings.

    5. Vojtech Cihar – Forward (Kelowna Rockets, WHL)

Selected in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, Vojtech Cihar has rapidly ascended the prospect rankings. The 18-year-old Czech forward began the 2025-26 season in his home country but struggled to find consistent ice time. A mid-season move to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League proved to be the catalyst he needed.

Cihar immediately made an impact in North America, posting 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) in 31 regular-season games. He elevated his game further in the playoffs, recording 13 points in just nine contests. This impressive run followed a standout performance at the World Junior Championship, where he earned MVP honors while leading Czechia to a silver medal.

Kings Development Coach Jarret Stoll has praised Cihar’s hockey IQ and two-way game. “He makes the right play. He makes the smart play,” Stoll noted recently. “He’s a great 200-foot player already.”

Cihar is expected to return to junior hockey for the 2026-27 season, where he will look to build upon his breakout campaign and further refine his offensive skills.

    4. Kenny Connors – Forward (Ontario Reign, AHL)

Kenny Connors is the type of player every successful NHL team needs. Selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Draft out of UMass, Connors transitioned seamlessly to the professional ranks last season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

The 6-foot-1 forward compiled 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists) and a plus-18 rating in 65 games. He led all Reign rookies in nearly every major statistical category and even recorded a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” early in the season.

Mark Yannetti, the Kings’ Director of Amateur Scouting, is a vocal supporter of Connors’ game. “I love guys that have hockey sense,” Yannetti said. “I’d love to see him be a higher-level third-line center, and that’s his potential. But if he falls anywhere between third or even fourth, the way he plays, he’s a playoff-contender center at some point in his career.”

With the Kings adding veteran depth this offseason, Connors may start the 2026-27 campaign in Ontario. However, his versatility, grit, and hockey intelligence make him a prime candidate for an NHL call-up when injuries inevitably occur.

    3. Jared Woolley – Defenseman (Kitchener Rangers, OHL)

It is rare for a sixth-round draft pick to crack the top three of a prospect ranking, but Jared Woolley is a rare talent. Selected 164th overall in 2024, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound defenseman has developed into a formidable presence on the blue line.

Woolley split the 2025-26 season between the London Knights and the Kitchener Rangers, amassing 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists), a plus-32 rating, and 74 penalty minutes in 66 games. He brings a unique combination of size, physicality, and surprising offensive upside.

Having already won an OHL Championship and participated in two Memorial Cups, Woolley possesses valuable big-game experience. He is expected to make the jump to the AHL this season, where his progress against professional competition will be closely monitored. If he can adapt to the speed of the pro game, Woolley has the potential to become a punishing, shutdown defender at the NHL level.

2b. Carter George – Goaltender (Soo Greyhounds, OHL)

The Kings have a fascinating situation developing in their goaltending pipeline, with two elite prospects vying for the top spot. Tied for second in the rankings is Carter George, a second-round pick in 2024.

George has been nothing short of spectacular for the Soo Greyhounds. Last season, he posted a 23-17-0 record with a .907 save percentage and a 2.73 goals-against average. Beyond the traditional statistics, George has demonstrated a flair for the dramatic, scoring a goalie goal and representing Team Canada at the World Junior Championship.

Perhaps most impressively, George recorded a shutout in his AHL debut with the Ontario Reign. A lifelong Kings fan, George possesses the athleticism and composure required to succeed at the highest level. He will likely return to the OHL for one more season of seasoning before turning pro full-time.

2a. Hampton Slukynsky – Goaltender (Western Michigan, NCAA)

Sharing the second spot is Hampton Slukynsky, a fourth-round pick in 2023 who has dominated at every level he has played. Slukynsky has been named Goaltender of the Year in Minnesota High School Hockey, the USHL, and the NCAA.

During his sophomore season at Western Michigan, Slukynsky compiled a 27-11-0 record with a stellar .915 save percentage and a 2.30 goals-against average. He also represented Team USA at the World Junior Championship, winning both of his starts with a .933 save percentage.

Like George, Slukynsky made a brief but impactful appearance in the AHL last spring, winning both of his starts for the Ontario Reign with a combined .957 save percentage. The battle between George and Slukynsky for the title of “Goaltender of the Future” will be one of the most intriguing storylines to follow in the coming years.

    1. Henry Brzustewicz – Defenseman (London Knights, OHL)

While the official MayorsManor article teased the number one prospect, all indications point to Henry Brzustewicz claiming the top spot. Acquired in a trade, the dynamic defenseman has established himself as one of the premier offensive blueliners in junior hockey.

Brzustewicz possesses elite skating ability, exceptional vision, and a heavy shot. He is a prototypical modern NHL defenseman, capable of driving possession and quarterbacking a power play. As the Kings look to transition their defensive core in the post-Drew Doughty era, Brzustewicz represents the most crucial piece of the puzzle.

The Doughty Dilemma: “The Last Time Is Now”

Speaking of Drew Doughty, the veteran defenseman’s future remains a topic of intense speculation. Doughty is entering the final year of his eight-year, $88 million contract, which carries an $11 million salary cap hit.

General Manager Ken Holland has publicly stated that the organization will not engage in contract extension talks with Doughty this summer. This decision sets the stage for a high-stakes 2026-27 season.

Recent promotional materials and social media posts have subtly framed the upcoming campaign with the tagline, “The Last Time Is Now.” Whether this refers to the current core’s final push for a championship or Doughty’s potential final season in Los Angeles remains to be seen.

Doughty, who holds the franchise record for points by a defenseman in a single season (105), remains a vital component of the Kings’ roster. However, with the emergence of Brandt Clarke and the impending arrival of prospects like Brzustewicz and Woolley, the organization must carefully manage its salary cap and defensive transition.

    Looking Ahead

The Los Angeles Kings are navigating a delicate balancing act. They have assembled a roster capable of competing in the Western Conference, bolstered by the additions of Mats Zuccarello, Erik Haula, and Scott Laughton. Yet, the true strength of the organization lies in its prospect pool.

As the team prepares to don the new purple “Hometown Remix” jerseys, they are also preparing to pass the torch. The 2026-27 season will be a critical juncture for the franchise, a year where the established veterans and the rising stars must coalesce under Peter Laviolette’s system.

For fans of the Kings, the future is bright, and it just might be purple.
