The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a disappointing 128-106 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, collapsing in the fourth quarter after leading for much of the game. The loss marks a frustrating end to the calendar year for the Lakers, who have now lost seven of their last twelve games.
As previewed in the pre-game press conference, the Lakers knew they were in for a physical battle against the young and athletic Pistons. However, they were unable to match Detroit’s intensity down the stretch, turning the ball over 21 times and allowing the Pistons to dominate in the paint.
In his post-game press conference, a visibly frustrated JJ Redick pointed to the team’s offensive struggles in the second half as the primary reason for the loss. “The turnovers, the fast break points, points in the paint that just killed us tonight,” Redick said. He acknowledged the team’s frustration with the officiating but emphasized that they needed to play through the physical nature of the game. “We’re still trying to figure that out,” Redick admitted when asked about the team’s identity.
Luka Dončić, who had a strong performance for three quarters, echoed his coach’s sentiments. “I think we were playing great basketball for three quarters and then we just, they just went on an insane run,” Dončić said. He took personal responsibility for his turnovers, stating, “I had a lot of turnovers, and then just, uh, went down in transition and scored.” Dončić also emphasized the need for the team to match the physicality of their opponents, a theme that has been consistent throughout the season.
The loss is a tough one for the Lakers, who are still trying to find their footing amidst a series of lineup changes and injuries. The team will look to bounce back in their next game as they head into the new year.
