In his pre-game press conference ahead of the Lakers’ matchup with the Detroit Pistons on December 30, 2025, JJ Redick offered insights into the team’s preparation, player injuries, and the remarkable career of LeBron James. Redick, speaking as a seasoned analyst, emphasized the need for mental and physical toughness against a young, athletic Pistons squad.
Redick compared the Pistons to the Houston Rockets, highlighting their aggressive, physical style of play. “They run, they drive, and they really pressure you and they crash,” Redick noted. “So it’s another one of those games, it’s a great test for our group… to match their level of physicality and match how hard they play.” He stressed the importance of playing through contact, as the Pistons are known for their high foul rate. “One of the things we just talked about with our group is just having the mental toughness tonight to play through that,” he said.
Providing an update on Rui Hachimura, Redick confirmed that the forward is dealing with right calf soreness and is expected to be out for about a week. “He’ll miss a couple games and then we’ll get him ramped up and hopefully he’s playing again in the next week,” Redick stated.
When asked about the longevity of LeBron James’ career, Redick reflected on the “competitive stamina” required to maintain such a high level of performance for so long. He spoke of the “external cost that comes with caring” and the internal toll of “exhaustion… burnout… mental fatigue, physical fatigue.” He concluded, “It’s why you don’t see many great athletes that can sustain it for as long as he’s sustained it.”
Redick also touched on the Lakers’ success in developing two-way players like Nick Smith Jr., crediting a collaborative effort between the front office, scouting department, and coaching staff. “We’re all collaborating and working together to try to find guys that not only we can develop, but also that could help us if we have injuries,” he explained.
