Kings of the Grind: Can LA’s Defensive Grit and a Red-Hot Kempe Spark a Stanley Cup Run?

As the calendar speeds towards the holiday break, the Los Angeles Kings find themselves in a familiar, yet precarious, position. They are a team defined by a relentless defensive identity, a knack for grinding out close games, and a frustrating inconsistency on the offensive end. After a crucial 2-1 road victory against the formidable Tampa Bay Lightning, the Kings return to the friendly confines of Crypto.com Arena for a two-game homestand, looking to build momentum and solidify their place in the hyper-competitive Pacific Division. While the team may not be firing on all cylinders, the pieces are in place for a deep playoff run, led by a resurgent Adrian Kempe, a history-chasing Anze Kopitar, and a goaltending tandem that gives them a chance to win every single night.

Post-Game Review: A Gutsy Win in Tampa

The Kings’ recent win against the Lightning was a microcosm of their season thus far. It was a hard-fought, one-goal affair where the Kings were outshot but not out-willed. Goaltender Anton Forsberg, in a rare back-to-back start, was nothing short of spectacular, turning away 31 of 32 shots. His performance was a testament to his conditioning and the team’s confidence in him, a decision that coach Jim Hiller lauded post-game. “Forsy’s on the bike every day after practice, but he could run marathons, this guy,” Hiller remarked, highlighting the exceptional fitness that allowed Forsberg to shine on consecutive nights.

The offensive hero of the night was Adrian “Juice” Kempe, who single-handedly erased a 1-0 deficit with two second-period goals. His first was a blistering wrist shot that found its way through traffic, and the second was a dazzling display of speed and skill on a breakaway. The two goals propelled Kempe to the team lead with 13 on the season and marked his 100th career multi-point game. Hiller praised Kempe’s ability to deliver in crucial moments, stating, “When we were a little bit flat at times offensively, Juice is the guy who has shown us that he can come up with big goals.”

The victory was a full team effort, with the Kings blocking 22 shots and killing off three crucial penalties in the final period to secure the win. It was a display of the defensive commitment that has become the team’s calling card. As Kempe noted after the game, “I think the overall team game and our identity has been there all year. I think that’s the most important thing, and if we keep doing that, I think the wins are going to keep coming.”

Game Preview: Facing the Blue Jackets

The Kings will look to carry the momentum from their win in Tampa into their next matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets come to Los Angeles with a respectable 14-14-6 record, a team that has shown flashes of offensive firepower but has struggled with consistency. Key players to watch for Columbus include the dynamic Kirill Marchenko, the promising rookie Adam Fantilli, and the towering Dmitri Voronkov. The Blue Jackets’ defense is anchored by Zach Werenski, who is a threat on the offensive end as well, as evidenced by his two-goal performance in their recent loss to the Minnesota Wild.

For the Kings, the keys to victory will be to maintain their defensive structure, stay out of the penalty box, and find a way to generate more consistent offense. The power play, in particular, has been a source of frustration for the team and its fans. A successful power play against the Blue Jackets could be the spark the Kings need to unlock their scoring potential. The second line, featuring Kevin Fiala, will be looked upon to provide a scoring punch. Fiala has been a consistent contributor, with 12 goals and 23 points on the season, and his performance will be critical to the Kings’ success.

The Bigger Picture: A Season of Resilience

While the win against the Lightning was a positive step, the Kings’ season has been a rollercoaster ride. As of December 20th, they sit fourth in the tightly contested Pacific Division with a 15-10-9 record. However, their underlying numbers suggest a team that is better than their record indicates. They are playing at a 102-point pace and have an 81.1% chance of making the playoffs, according to MoneyPuck.

Earlier in December, the Kings were tied for first place in the division, a position they hadn’t held on December 1st since 2017. This early success was built on the back of their stellar defense and their ability to win close games. An incredible 20 of their first 25 games were decided by a single goal, and they have played in a league-leading 12 overtime games. This “grind it out” mentality has been both a blessing and a curse. While it has allowed them to stay in the playoff hunt, it has also highlighted their offensive deficiencies.

Coach Jim Hiller acknowledged the team’s struggles, even when they were at the top of the standings. “I know it hasn’t felt like we’ve been playing like a first-place team, start to finish, but what it does tell you is how close it is and how we’ve just continued to grind our way through it,” he said on December 1st. This sentiment is echoed by the players, who are well aware of the need to find more consistent scoring.

    Kopitar’s Historic Chase

Amidst the team’s ups and downs, a major storyline has been Anze Kopitar’s pursuit of franchise history. The Kings’ captain is just 12 points away from tying Marcel Dionne’s all-time franchise scoring record of 1,307 points. Every point Kopitar scores brings him closer to etching his name in the Kings’ history books, a testament to his incredible career and his enduring impact on the franchise. His leadership, both on and off the ice, has been instrumental in guiding the team through its early-season challenges.

    The Road Ahead

The Kings are a team with a clear identity and a proven formula for success. Their defensive prowess and goaltending give them a chance to win every night, but their ultimate success will depend on their ability to find more consistent offense. The upcoming homestand against the Blue Jackets and the Seattle Kraken provides a perfect opportunity to build on their recent win and gain some much-needed momentum heading into the new year. With a healthy mix of veteran leadership and young talent, the Kings have all the pieces in place to make a deep playoff run. The question is, can they put it all together and once again become the Kings of the NHL?
