Is This the Year the Clippers Finally Break the Curse, or Will It Be Another Season of Heartbreak?

Clippers stars Harden and Leonard ready to break championship curse and overcome expectations

The Los Angeles Clippers are once again the talk of the town, but for all the familiar reasons. The air is thick with a potent cocktail of championship aspirations and the ever-present fear of what could go wrong. This offseason has been a whirlwind of high-profile acquisitions, creating a roster that, on paper, looks like a juggernaut. Yet, the specter of injury has already cast its long shadow over the team, with the recent news of Bogdan Bogdanovic’s hamstring tear during the 2025 EuroBasket tournament. It’s the same old story for Clippers fans: a tantalizing glimpse of a glorious future, immediately followed by a harsh dose of reality. Is this the year they finally overcome the infamous “Clippers Curse,” or are they destined for another season of what-ifs and bitter disappointment?

The front office has been anything but idle, orchestrating a series of moves that have transformed the Clippers into one of the deepest teams in the league. The headline-grabbing acquisition of Bradley Beal, a three-time All-Star, from the Phoenix Suns for a surprisingly low price, sent shockwaves through the NBA. Beal, who had a tumultuous tenure in Phoenix, is looking for a fresh start and a chance to prove he can be a key contributor on a championship-contending team. His offensive firepower and ability to create his own shot will be a welcome addition to a team that has at times struggled to score consistently, especially in the playoffs.

But the spending spree didn’t stop there. The Clippers also brought in a trio of seasoned veterans who bring a wealth of experience and specific skills to the table. Chris Paul, the “Point God” himself, returns to Los Angeles to provide leadership and playmaking in the backcourt. John Collins, a dynamic and athletic forward, will add a new dimension to the frontcourt with his ability to play above the rim and stretch the floor. And Brook Lopez, a former All-Star and one of the best stretch-fives in the league, will provide much-needed size and three-point shooting from the center position. These additions, combined with the existing core of Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, have created a roster that is both talented and versatile, capable of playing multiple styles and adapting to any opponent.

But just as the hype train was leaving the station, the Clippers were hit with a familiar dose of bad news. Bogdan Bogdanovic, the sharpshooting guard acquired from the Atlanta Hawks, went down with a hamstring injury while playing for the Serbian national team. The injury, a confirmed muscle tear, will sideline him for the remainder of the EuroBasket tournament and casts a dark cloud over the start of the Clippers’ season. While the team has not yet released a specific timeline for his return, hamstring injuries are notoriously tricky, and the recovery process could take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. This is a significant blow for the Clippers, who were counting on Bogdanovic to be a key contributor off the bench, providing instant offense and floor spacing. His absence will put more pressure on the other guards to step up and will test the team’s depth early in the season.

For long-suffering Clippers fans, this latest injury feels like a cruel case of déjà vu. The team has been plagued by injuries to key players in recent years, derailing their championship hopes time and time again. From Kawhi Leonard’s ACL tear in the 2021 playoffs to Paul George’s various ailments, the Clippers have had more than their fair share of bad luck. This latest setback with Bogdanovic only adds to the narrative that the team is cursed, forever destined to be on the cusp of greatness but never quite able to reach the promised land. It’s a narrative that the team is desperate to change, but one that will be difficult to shake until they can finally put together a healthy and successful playoff run.

Head coach Tyronn Lue, a man who knows a thing or two about winning championships, is tasked with navigating this treacherous landscape. Lue, who led the Cleveland Cavaliers to an improbable comeback victory in the 2016 NBA Finals, is a master motivator and a brilliant tactician. He has the respect of his players and a proven track record of getting the most out of his teams. In a recent interview, Lue spoke about the importance of mental toughness and the need for his players to embrace the grind of a long season. He lamented the modern NBA’s culture of load management, a stark contrast to his playing days when players were expected to play through minor injuries and practice with intensity every day. “When I was coming up, guys wanted to play more minutes, you always cried about not playing minutes. Now guys cry about playing too many minutes,” Lue said. His old-school mentality and no-nonsense approach could be exactly what the Clippers need to overcome their past demons and finally reach their full potential.

Lue’s coaching philosophy will be put to the test this season as he tries to manage a veteran-laden roster with a history of injuries. He will have to find the right balance between pushing his players to be their best and preserving their health for the playoffs. It’s a delicate dance, but one that Lue is more than capable of performing. He has a deep and talented roster at his disposal, and he will have plenty of options to mix and match lineups and keep his players fresh. The addition of veterans like Chris Paul and Brook Lopez will also help to lighten the load on Kawhi Leonard and James Harden, allowing them to be at their best when it matters most.

The Clippers will open their preseason schedule on October 9th against the Guangzhou Loong Lions, giving fans their first look at the new-look roster. They will then face the Denver Nuggets on October 12th in their first game at the new Intuit Dome, a state-of-the-art arena that will be their home for years to come. The preseason will be a crucial time for the team to build chemistry and for Lue to experiment with different lineups and rotations. It will also be a chance for the younger players to prove they deserve a spot in the rotation and for the veterans to shake off the rust and get back into game shape.

The Western Conference is as competitive as ever, with several teams vying for the top spot. The defending champion Denver Nuggets, led by the unstoppable Nikola Jokic, will be the team to beat. The Phoenix Suns, with their dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, will also be a force to be reckoned with. And the Golden State Warriors, with their championship pedigree, can never be counted out. The Clippers will have their work cut out for them, but they have the talent and the depth to compete with any team in the league. If they can stay healthy, this could be the year they finally break through and make a deep playoff run. But as Clippers fans know all too well, that’s a big “if.”

So, what can we expect from the Clippers this season? Will they finally live up to their potential and bring a championship to Los Angeles? Or will they once again be snake-bitten by injuries and fall short of their goals? The answer, as always, is unclear. But one thing is for sure: it’s going to be a wild ride. The Clippers are a team that is impossible to ignore, a team that is capable of both exhilarating highs and devastating lows. And for their long-suffering fans, all they can do is hold on tight and hope for the best. The stage is set, the players are in place, and the drama is about to unfold.
